To lock or not to lock?
Comanche County replied to aaronbtxnc's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Anything other than an open diff or factory LSD is just asking for trouble on ice. Don't do lockers on ice. -
Try ebay and make your reserve a little on the high side of what you think its worth. If it doesn't sell then you'll find out what other people are willing to bid for it. Its very nice, where did you get the labels for the gauges?

PM Backdraft, he's done it recently and can answer any questions. Lots of other members have done it too so I'm sure someone will reply soon. -

Looks like you guys had a great time. You're a lucky guy Sam. -
anybody have strange brake trouldes before ?
Comanche County replied to cz777's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'd offer any assistance I can, but I'm having a difficult time deciphering your last post. I really don't understand what "r&r'ing" a brake booster is, the rest of your post is confusing also. -
Stop, please make it stop! It's hurting my eyes!!!!

Okay, now I kinda like it now. You guys swayed me.

You could do a small stroker also with a 232 crank.
-
With those short coil springs it obviously has no flex at all, its a show rig designed to sit in one place and look big to impress those who don't know better. Except that they forgot to put a shiny paint job and chrome shocks on it.

I can't say if it'll be good or not....depends on what you want to use it for. Honestly, I think the best thing you could do is call up Hesco in Birmingham, AL. They're good folks and will shoot you straight. They are the nation's forerunners in stroking the 4.0L. There a several members here who have stroked motors from Hesco and from several other engine providers who can give you good advice. There are several good manufacturers who sell stroked crate motors. A stroker is in my future, I've got the same 258 crank you mentioned patiently waiting in storage. Its just waiting for the right time. One day my MJ will have a larger displacement engine...I'm taking it slow though, and have been researching and educating myself on this. Check out http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/stroker.html, the last link is very good I thought.

Every fifth or so engine oil change deserves a complete vehicle fluid change. Tranny ("lifetime fluid transmissions" are a farce), TC, axles, PS pump, everything. Without abuse, any axle, a D35 or a D80, with frequent oil changes should last a very long time, almost forever. However, there are occasional factory imperfections in shafts, ring and pinions, bearings, seals, etc. Sometimes it just happens and there's no preventive measure to prevent it. Modern manufacturing is very precise, market survival demands it. But sometimes *&^% happens. Just because it broke, it may not be your fault.

Do I have to keep my ex in the will if we're all going to die anyway? :D

Many years ago a friend and I were talking (complaining) about women and I described my ideal woman. I said I was looking for someone who was first, loyal, always happy to see me, didn't care about my faults or past mistakes, would always be by my side, and number one - be someone I could have fun with everyday. He said, "Dude, you just described a freakin dog!" So later, I went and got a dog instead!

Well, at least its got a nice rear bumper. I'd have to say it was done by professionals who can't read, or maybe they can and are active on our evil twin's website in an parallel universe...CommanderClub.com. This thing is useless and is nothing but wrong,,,,, sorry for being terse. http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/3047695181.html

As my father ages and is slowing down more and more every year, he still retains a super sharp baseball mind. He and I always coached my three little brother's little league teams. I learned a lot. I went on to coach a couple of little league teams while in college. Anyway back to the old man, a diehard Dodgers fan from his days as a kid living in Cali in the 50s and 60s, his home state Rangers now are his most loved team. Over the last two years he and I have went to a World Series Game (Game 3 vs the Giants), then I took a pass and my brother took him to next years League Championship game vs the Tigers. The Rangers this year seem to be the most dangerous offensive team in baseball, perhaps its their year, who knows though since the season isn't even half way through. So as he and I sit and watch the games this year as his health continues to fade, his seemingly unending baseball knowledge is always ever present. Recently the Mets just had their first No-Hitter. ESPN was commenting on this momentous occasion for the that club and all Dad talks about is their mistake in trading Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi while Fregosi was in the twilight of his career and Nolan went on to throw three no-hitters for the Angels after the trade. Then Dad goes off on a tangent about Ford Frick the commissioner who was the first to "invent" the asterisk. He decided to put an asterisk on Roger Maris' single season home run record after Maris beat Ruth's single season HR record....only because Maris had more games in the season than Ruth which in his judgement deserved the asterisk. Dad then mentions that Frick and Ruth were good buddies, Frick even served later as ghost writer for Ruth. Dad knows everything about the game. Anyhow, I guess I post this because as we watch the season and hope for the Rangers to finally win the big one, and hope that Josh Hamilton breaks Maris' record and he's on pace to do so, which is what spawned the conversation, I realize that even though we're both older and not out playing catch anymore, it sure is good to watch baseball with the old man. I never could throw a curve ball when I played, I was always a pitcher. Recently while walking through the local swap meet I bought a couple of gloves and a ball. Now I'm playing catch with whoever will throw with me so I can practice the curve. I hope to teach my 8 year old son to throw a curve (the most intimidating pitch in little league) and that one day when I'm old and my health is failing, I hope when my last days come that my son will sit around and and at least talk baseball with me. Cherish your old man, the inevitable is coming soon and I'm gonna miss mine.

What engine/transmission/Tcase do you have? If you have a V8, that' means a 5.2/44RE/NP249. In 96' the 249 was redesigned and has a viscous coupler which will engage the front drive shaft automatically when there's a difference in tire speed (rear wheel spin). Prior years (93'-95') 249s have a differential in the Tcase. In those years if you remove the front drive shaft and park on a hill, the Jeep will start to roll down hill even after you put it in park. Viscous Couplers usually only last about 70K miles, then they lock up and the front and rear drive shafts are locked as one and power is always sent to the front wheels. You'll know right away if yours good if you put the front wheels on the dolly and try to drive away because the rear wheels will not turn. Because the front wheels are strapped down and locked the rear wheels are locked also. However if your viscous coupler is good, you'll be able to put the fronts on the tow dolly and start to pull away. But while you're towing the rear wheels and drive shaft will spin and in effect, that will spin the viscous coupler and hydraulic pressure will build and the front drive shaft will want to spin also. If you drive very far, you won't have a good VC anymore. Bottom line is when you use the tow dolly and you've got a 96'-98' 249, then you must remove the rear drive shaft. With a 4.0L/42RE/231 or 242, you can use the dolly without removing the rear drive shaft. Transmission goes in park, TC in neutral. Do not leave the transmission in neutral! With the rear drive shaft installed it will still spin the transmission internals and wreak havok on your bands and clutches. However, what if someone accidentally puts in in neutral, or you accidental leave it in neutral, you may break something, so again, regardless of what combo, its still a good idea to remove or disconnect the rear drive shaft when using a tow dolly!

Those plugs are for a number of different switches that were available depending on the options, model and year. They were for fog lights, bed cargo light, and power/comfort switch for earlier AW4s although I've never seen on on an MJ. Next time you're in a yard, go through the XJs and you'll likely find on with all the switches present, usually in Limited models. It's not technically TBI, but it is a throttle body, not sure why it does that. Dig through the tech section for "Renix diagnosis", you should be able to find an answer. There's also a ton of good links in the FAQs and the stickies. One page with an excellent write up for Renix sensors is at the Lunghd site. http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Eng ... ostics.htm Other links: viewforum.php?f=9, viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7910 Its a nice straight looking truck too. Besides the rust in the frame rail you mentioned,,,better get on that pretty quick....Also, welcome to the club!!!

The main flaw in your premise Jim is the word: "build". Never mind that we have to rely on them to get us to space nowadays. Generally the Russians are too drunk to build anything. This is why Putin often goes on these "manly" excursions to wrestle bears, go fishing without a shirt on and tranquilize wild tigers and such. Its a PR effort to inspire the male population to go out and do something, anything besides boozing themselves to death (which btw is something I'm quite fond of). ....I'm surprised they even used a bull dozer, usually Russians just gather around 4,000 villagers with a tow rope for such retrievals. :D
-
I think the author was reflecting on the happiness of the owners of said dozer, since most mechanical things in Mother Russia don't last very long (neither did my short lived romance with Nadia the bar maid in Waco, TX...that's another story though) or the author was drinking, drinking vodka to be precise. They do drink vodka in the Ukraine don't they? :dunno: Since I read this article I found out that its sort of a frequent occurrence to find forgotten and submerged vehicles out there on the Eastern Front. Nonetheless, still a cool rescue of a piece of history.
