  1. That heat gun trick might work. Id have to remove the switches though. Thanks for the tip!
  2. Also, this is my first XJ or MJ with chrome....I'm kinda liking it!
  3. Yeah, this was supposed to be a "One day XJ" build. I had everything for it but was disappointed at having to buy brakes. But its gotta be safe to drive,,,,better safe than sorry. ;) I'm also thinking of making a roof rack outta HF ATV cargo baskets. Something like this:
  4. Thanks, I'll give that a try!
  5. Been wondering this myself. I know there was a unit bearing change in 2000, but when I went to buy calipers and rotors for my 89' XJ, I checked several stores, only Advance had the calipers. The rotors were listed as 80'-88' only in every store's computer. They fit AMC cars and Jeeps with discs only through 88'. IIRC there was a knuckle change around that time where the caliper bracket bolts up differently.
  6. I have a little xj project I'm working on. Guys, how would you restore the surface of these switches? I don't want to paint them and don't want to ruin them through trial and error...normally I wouldn't care but I'm gonna sell this one. I'm thinking there may be some solvent or solution that will make em shine again.
  7. I kinda like the idea of a having a Wankel engine, not necessarily in any vehicle. Just as a garage ornament and talking piece. I saw an Rx7 in the yard the other day and did the same bench racing idea. But man, those things are full of all sorts of vacuum lines, oil and coolant lines etc. It would be interesting to see one in a Jeep but I don't think I'd attempt it.
  8. Same as Mnkyboy, think mine were from a 2000 IIRC. I broke it apart into three pieces like he did, otherwise the center console/seat is level with the others. The Dakota doesn't have quite the hump that an MJ does. They gave me a little more leg room than the MJ buckets.
  9. I picked up this 89' XJ on a trade for a bone stock AR. Its a 4.0 renix, 231, D30/D35. I had 900 bucks in the gun and it came with brand new 30" Cooper STT mud tires, that's almost $700 in tires alone so I figured it would be a good candidate for a mild family wheeler. The goal was to give it a small lift with the spares I've got floating around my garage. Its got a lot issues though. Needs a rear main seal and it has blow by pretty bad. Also, it has excessively high oil pressure. It hovers around 60 psi and settles down to about 40 psi when warm and pretty much stays there on the highway and street driving. Good thing is the heat and AC works nice. Looks to still be on R12. Also needs a headliner, weather stripping and some other color beside rustoleum yellow. It has electric windows, but I think the rear doors need bushings or new window motors, they're real slow and one side needs help to go back up. I should've picked a better candidate to flip but this one won't be too bad when I'm done. I think I'm going to give it a military paint job like on my MJ. PO's pics... First thing was to dump the grey instrument panel, I've got a handful of the fake wood grain country panels, I like them better. Then added one of my extra radios and a set of door speakers. Someone put a non-cruise column in it...so finding a grey cruise column is on the list too. I made friends with a guy that works at the local LKQ, now he keeps me updated on any jeeps that come in the yard...he dropped this XJ right on the end of the row for me. My buddy helped me pull its lift components. 4" coils and 4x Pro comp ES3000 shocks, the rear had 3" blocks and helper springs. Also had 4 1.5" spacers....good score. My JY buddy is gonna be dropping a ZJ with a 6" lift and adjustable CAs next week...I plan to get those too. I also helped a guy put a SUA lift on his YJ which had a SOA lift. I got to keep the take offs, 4 more procomp shocks,,,longer than the JY XJ, stock YJ springs and some perches and other odds and ends. Whoever did the lift on his YJ couldn't weld at all, the perches just knocked off and the welds on the rear were already broken. He'd been driving around like that for some time. Went and pulled a headliner board and every piece of weather stripping from a 99' XJ...the weatherstripping on the 89' was just shot. I like the built in speaker mounts in the 97' and up XJs. lots of little things to fix under the hood... Brakes were poop, so it got new pads, rotors and calipers. Also gonna get a ZJ dual diaphragm booster and MC I've got in the garage. Rear hatch cover was held on by deck screws and there was one pioneer 4x6 speaker and a bunch of crappy wiring. I may just go get another hatch from the JY. back panel was poop too, picked a new one. Putting the front lift on...it got the 4" springs, RE tubular LCAs, shocks, V8 ZJ sway bar and steering linkages. With the front lift on. Got the rear lift on today. It got the longer YJ procomp shocks using the rear sway brackets as a BPE,and an MJ/XJ bastard pack. Its the main XJ leaf and the others are MJ leafs including the overload spring. The front is a little higher compared to the back, I may cut the coils down or throw on some MJ shackles...I think some longer shackles are the way to go, should flex a little better than the shorter XJ shackles. So far it handles pretty good, corners well without much roll at all with the bigger sway bar up front. It is a little stiff but that's fine with me. The headliner and exterior paint are next.
  10. Flip this around the right way and it will say "Beer"!
  11. #1, worn track bar bushings as mentioned, or worn WJ LCA bushings. Worn pilot bushing and a worn input bearing on the transmission may be causing #2 and #3. That definitely can cause that shaking on take off. For #3, does it do it at highway speed while under power or also coasting at high speed? Drop it in neutral when up to the speed it happens, if it still occurs that may rule out the transmission but it could also be a worn ujoint, wheel balance, or driveshaft issue.
  12. Nice find if you ask me.... But just as everything in the Jeep world, scarcity doesn't equate to more value. But if the demand comes up so will value. I think the MJ really does have a chance....at least better than the XJ as far as collectors go.

  14. Anyone wanna try to get a CC contingent to go? Mud isn't really my thing but a group of Comanches would steal the show for sure.....full sizes on rockwells blowing coal..., nah,,,,MJ's have way more cool factor IMO.
  15. Yesterday I helped a guy put a lift on his YJ. He brought his 7 year old boy over. We wrenched most of the day while our very exuberant helper fetched tools and occupied himself playing with my power tools and clamoring all over my Willys most of the day. He was especially impressed by welding, I had him in my extra helmet,,,as well as the air ratchet. But the little rascal would dissapear into the back yard every now and then. Once, I was under the jeep and I heard the distinctive sound of my squeaky lawnmower wheels, then I heard, "Mr. Jay, I'm gonna mow your yard for you". Then I heard him pulling the start cord. Even though there's no grass growing yet, I told him if he could start it, then he could mow it. Figured it wouldn't start, and sure as heck it did! Had to shut that down....Then he found my squeegee and said he was gonna clean all my Jeeps window for me...I told him to have at it.... Anyway, today I found the squeegee in the back yard where I store my larger spare parts. I've got a bunch of wheels, ZJ doors, axles etc tucked away between the corner of the house and the fence. The squeegee sponge was painted black, as well as my previously white ZJ doors and one of the wheels of my spare set of silver stars. I'm not mad at all, he was a cute little cowboy boot wearing tough guy who obviously thought he was helping me out.....that's what I get for being a jeep hoarder I guess. Anyway, I haven't tried to remove the black paint yet, wanted to see what ya'll recommend to get the rustoleum off without damaging the wheels or the oem paint on the doors.
  16. Its 75 degrees down here Rob. Just write that one off so you don't have to lay in the ice sludge......send me a requisition and I'll get you what you want all the while wearing my shorts and Birkenstocks. Just kidding, I really don't wear no damn hippie birkenstocks. But since its spring now I'm in sandals and shorts instead of my winter cowboy ariats and carhartts.
  17. Yeah I thought the UC was supposed to have the hooks and skids....Did the shocks have booties on em? They were supposed to have higher grade shocks.
  18. Awesome a camera on a tripod and compound bow on the hood of an MJ, very nice lookin machine!
  19. 5.9s
  20. I know the Mantanzas club will be there, I'll be coming with out local club, the mud rats, (we don't really go mudding anymore). We can have our own little CC contingent, I better stock up on some more swag though.
  21. I'm planning on it, haven't registered yet though.
