How to find the GVW of a Jeep P/U
jpdocdave replied to jimoshel's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
sounds like he's saying load the jeep untill a peice of paper doesn't fit between the axle and bump stop add 100 pounds and you're done  and eagle is right about gvw. -
good job man, i got my ase certifications mainly for the customers to see it on the wall. i've seen some inept mechanics with master tech certification.

what other type of vehicle owners have these stories. all the normal people would have A: kept driving regardless of engine temperature and leaking. or B: sat there for a tow truck. good job man. i gave a guy a jump at a gas station a couple years back, he said "i was hoping a jeep guy would come around, they always have everything."

AX-15 to AW4 swap in 91??
jpdocdave replied to ncgamedog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
aw4's are computer controlled, more so in the later years aren't they? you'll also need trans cooler lines, the cooler is usually built into the radiator but sometimes vehicles with manual trans do not have a cooler in the radiator, so you'd have to buy a radiator if that was the case. i don't know if your transfer case from the ax15 will bolt right up to the aw4, but you can usually find a trans/t case combo pretty cheap if it doesn't. its been done all over so i'm sure someone has some first hand info. -
bad position, if you tell them to screw off and leave it alone you'll come get it, who knows what parts will be missing. if you're desperate for this mj i'd counter offer, say 150 or something. and if you don't have to have it, tell them i don't have the money, and we agreed on a price and thats what i'll pay. i'd never buy a vehicle that i couldn't start and drive, unless i knew i was tearing it apart anyway.

well since i had nothing better to do, i measured some of the tires i have laying around. different brands are gonna measure differently. my 30" cooper stt mud tires measure 29" dead nuts mounted and aired up w/ around 70% tread left. i measured a good year 235/75r15 new spare mounted and aired up, and it is 28" dead nuts. asthetically that is a big difference.
-
30's are bigger than 235's, 265/75 measures 30.5 inches, 30x9.50 are gonna measure 29 usually. i have 30" mud tires for my stock big ton, plenty of room out back, they rub on full turn in one direction only up front. i like the way 30's look on mine.

i use valvoline max life 10w30. the higher mileage is 2 dollars more a 5 qt. container than regular stuff at wally world, and i have been happy with it. the top end of mine is all new, the bottom end was all leaking, oil pan, rear main? oil filter adapter, i've been using this oil for a year or so and its stopped leaking all over the bottom, i was shocked last time i was under it. and no its not because the oil all leaked out, its full  i do belive though that changing the oil regularly is beneficial for seals and such. since i see so many cars on a daily basis in the shop, i've noticed that cars that prolong oil change intervals seem to have more leaks. i think molecularly the crud and crap floating around after all that time damages seals, just my screwed up opinion. and speaking molecularly, i do belive that synthetic oil can be more likely to leak on a high mileage engine, and everytime i ask an oil rep they say the same. synthetic has a more consistant and smaller molecular structure (think of a bucket full of golf balls) dino oil has more spurratic, and less consistant molecular structure (same bucket full of golf balls, tennis balls, baseballs.....) i won't say synthetic oil causes leaks, it doesn't, but, a worn seal may be more likely to leak when synthetic oil is used.

What have you towed with your MJ?
jpdocdave replied to aerocorey's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i'm with ya man, i will eventually have a ram 2500 diesel tow rig, but its not in the cards now, and even when i get that truck i'm not gonna give up the mj. so i'm gonna see how the ole mj handles it. i have an electric brake controller ready to go in, i'm no trailer brake expert, but it seems surge brakes are more on boat or construction applications i thought. electric brakes are gonna be more common on a light car hauler trailer. thats the other thing, i'm using a trailer around 1200 lbs, that is still long enough to distribute the load. a shorter trailer can limit how you set the tongue weight. -

i'm going to be towing a jeep with my big ton mj. i know some people will say its crazy, but like you said, know what you're driving, it isn't gonna win any races, and keep it in a safe zone, i'll probably just cruise down the hwy around 55 or so. i also added an aux. trans cooler and trans temp gauge. i'd consider this a must, the aw4 gets hot from what i read. i also used 85w140 gear oil in the rear end. edit: i would suggest inspecting the metal brake lines throughout the chassis. if they are even close to questionable, don't tow untill you replace them. having a brake line pop could be pretty bad maxing out a smaller truck like that, mine are all new. same thing with all maintenance, service the transmission, inspect the brakes, make sure the rears are adjusted properly. inspect front end, ball joints, tie rods, stab. links and so on. and drive shaft u joints  -
^ that is one sweet job, i was trying to find that thread.
