Installing DynaPad around the hump
Pete M replied to jodawill's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I've probably mentioned it before, but I'll say it again just in case... it is immensely important that you be sure that all water intrusion has been dealt with. especially the sneaky ones like the antenna grommet. -

only enough to get it to stay put while I wrestled with the carpet (new carpet so there was a LOT of wrestling to be done ) -

you can do it anyway you like. little gaps won't matter and the ugliness will all be hidden for breanne's truck I cut the insulation into shapes that fit on the floorboards directly, aka avoiding putting it on top the frame cap and braces. the key is that the carpet lays proper on top and the various seat bolts and seatbelt bolts are accessible. -
you should open that up asap and make sure the wire isn't grounding out.

the soviets never made a full mockup, only models, but in the early 50s apparently they were contemplating this:

big nope. last thing I need is more power in the little car. not with this silly automatic at least. though someday I would like to find a factory turbo stickshift again. we had one back in 03.

more cruiser add-ons. mostly junkyard stuff. official mat that actually fits rear mudflaps that I hadn't cleaned yet a freaking hitch!!! perfect for a rack a rear swaybar! apparently all 01-02 had them before they were discontinued. BUT all the holes and hardware is still in the later cars for some reason. rando stubby antenna because why not. and for a bit of class, the cheap chrome pipe extension

pretty sure that rubber trim comes free with the 97+ glass? I don't remember there being a price difference.

oh, and I spotted a fresh 05 CRD the other day and grabbed a few spare parts from it. the front shafts are unique to CRDs and now I have a spare set. (plus brakes, spindles, e-fan, hoses and some other stuff). I may go back in a couple weeks after I give other owners a chance at the engine/computer bits. I have enough of those.

hopefully this junkyard oil cooler will help keep the high transmission temps at bay. the factory unit is integrated into the lower couple inches of the AC condenser and is buried down behind my bumper. less than ideal. the new cooler isn't actually in the fan's airflow, but space is at a premium and it's right there in front. I have a better plan, but it'll have to wait because it's way more involved. this was quick and dirty.

pretty sure I used safelite with breanne's truck. either way it was an in-driveway experience. I told them it was a 97 XJ. I never uttered the word Comanche. no one seemed to care. that said, after removal there was rust I had to deal with but the guy happily came back a couple days later.

What should I do while the carpet is pulled up?
Pete M replied to jodawill's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
in the last truck I glued the foam to the truck with a bead of rtv and then added a bit more to the engine side (like caulking) after the original bead had set. -
spotted this one in the junkyard the other day. the exhaust pipe on the left is factory, the one on the right is... only a foot long and connects to nothing. note the hitch though. that lives on my car now

those are indeed some of the factory weirdness once you start wailing away at that rust with a wire wheel and chiseling up the factory seam sealer, you're going to find plenty more pin holes. dealing with that is step one, but finding the water leaks is step 2.

I would leave the seam sealer alone if there isn't any sign of rust. if there's any hint of rust at the edge of some sealer, I would use a wire brush on a drill or grinder to explore how far it goes. keep in mind that preventing water intrusion is the single most important step to preventing rot. the floors are complicated and you cannot rustproof every nook and crevice. heck, if it stays dry, you can leave it completely alone and it'll be just fine forever -
Plastic B pillar vent cover gasket
Pete M replied to OzarkGuy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
make sure it is pretty soft so it doesn't push the plastic out. I think it's for dust prevention and vibration dampening while on the freeway more than water intrusion. -
