  1. The big reason to go with the 3.4 is the owner gets to reuse all of his current 2.8L stuff (exhaust, motor mounts, engine accessories, etc). If most of this stuff is bad or the truck is rotted out, then selling the truck and buying a 4.0 is likely a better deal. But if the owner has a cherry 86 and the 2.8 finally gave up the ghost, then the 3.4 is a practically bolt-in swap and they get to keep their baby. :D
  2. This site should help out a bit: http://www.madxj.com/MADXJ/technical/te ... dSeals.htm
  3. It could be a small short in the system. A truck to narrow down which circuit is the culprit is to pull out one fuse at a time and check the amps at the battery using a multimeter. In fact, you should probably first verify that there is indeed a drain and it's not simply a failing battery (which you can get checked out for free at many auto parts stores).
  4. Fuel pump relay?
  5. If you haven't already, I would check the fluid level again. There might have been air pockets in the trans before and the fluid level was actually even lower than it looked. My buddy's old Bronco had a trans that would do that (the air pocket thing, not the erratic shifting thing).
  6. Dumping the 3.07s isn't as much about wheeling as it is about keeping it fun to drive on the street. Offroad you can always shift into 4-low. Simply finding a set of XJ 3.55 axles will help out a lot.
  7. You'll need just about everything from the newer vehicle. Another choice is to grab just the shortblock from any newer rig and bolt that in place of your tired block. :D
  8. I can't figure out how you could attach an EGR to a non-EGR intake. Maybe if you welded on a little tab so you could bolt it into it's approximate place and then run some fake vacuum lines to it and call it good?
  9. I remember hearing a while back that the tach was somehow adjustable and hence a 4.0 cluster could be fitted into a 2.5 truck.
  10. You've double checked that the pilot bushing will indeed fit in the hole, yes?
  11. It's very important to find the source of the oil before throwing tools at it. For what it's worth, I nicked my RMS and it leaked like a sieve right away. :(
  12. Personally I don't think any of it is all that new, I just think we're exposed to more and more of it due to all the news coverage. Think back in history to any era and try to imagine what a 24 hour news channel would be covering.
  13. That's a lot too far for me to "swing by" but it sounds like you're going to need to get your butt up there in person. Good luck!
  14. Early AX-5s seem to have been external. Got one on my 86 MJ.
  15. The Detroit area is pretty big, but I live just south of the Motor City. Where abouts are you?
  16. Unless one of you has a time machine (and if you do, feel free to PM me :D ), no one was ever going to get them by Christmas. They take 2-3 weeks to make.  If anyone want their mags/cards/stickers sooner, just lemme know and I'll get them in the mail before I leave Saturday. (SuperWade2 yours will be on their way)
  17. I've gotten several last minute hat orders and I leave on Saturday for a week at my sisters place for the holidays. Does anyone have any objections with me placing the hat order on Jan 2nd? I know it's not exactly fair to the guys that forked over money weeks ago, but I still want to give everyone an opportunity to get one. Your thoughts?
  18. Intermittent 4wd is usually a faulty CAD (Central Axle Disconnect) in the front axle. Maybe the vacuum lines are leaking, or the shifter fork is sticking etc. A quick search for "CAD fix" should bring up some of the common ways to bypass the stupid CAD (make sure you click on the button that searches for all words).
  19. I can't help but notice that the cab doesn't match the bed and doors. :hmm:
  20. All anyone ever has to do to get some magnets/cards is send me an address.
  21. Been there, done that. My dog Perri had a horrible infection that he wasn't supposed to live through. We paid for the treatment anyway (over thanksgiving weekend no less). One gi-normous bill later later he made a full recovery. That was maybe 6 years ago and he's ~13 now. Never ever regretted it. :D We certainly aren't rich, but the decision to fight the infection came easy. Everyone's circumstances are different though and it's something you two have to decide for yourself. But I can offer this bit of advice: get a second opinion, or even a third. I don't ever want someone to say they "think" the problem is such-and-such. They better be telling me precisely why they think that and then I'm going to another expert and see what he thinks. In the automotive world this is usually a defense against ripoff artists, but in the medical world it is a defense against the utterly innumerable possibilities that certain generic symptoms could be resulting from. Good luck! :( --Pete
  22. The Metric Ton has 5 total leafs (including the overload) and normal MJs have 4 total. The Dana 44 was available with the "tow prep" package
  23. :D I didn't say it was necessarily going in my wheeler (aka the '88 ). :D But if it went in my 86, I'd suddenly have a reason to drive the thing more than once a year. :brows:
  24. Nooooobody's touching my R/T. :D
