    A Drunken Rant

The waving thing has always baffled me. In the sixties virtually every imported car would be involved. Then it all dried up. But you would think someone who drives a somewhat older car, kept in fairly good condition has some level of passion for their marque. But you get nothing, like they don't even see you. And this was before cell phones became a necessity while you drive. Now motorcycles use that low wave all the time.
  2. mjeff, your'e on the rusty edge. You must be just hanging onto the last bit of cable. Usually the breaking point is 1/2 to 1 inch from the felt. Some fiberglass reinforce tape formed into loops are handy to to pull the glass up until you can engage the cable again. Of course you need to post signs has to what the tape is for because everyone asks especially since no one will rmember before they put the window down all the way.

You can always put your bench seat in the Cherokee and call it rare and sell it at top dollar.

Now that is a bit of rationalization at it's finest. It's a developed skill, nice work. You've been bit!
  5. sorry, I meant the sensor is in the head.
  6. Where on the manifold? The coolant temp sensor is in the block next to the valve cover towards the rear of the engine (manifold side)
  7. Over the years I've heard all sort of stories of people busting loose some rusted up engine and getting many years of use. However, they were still installed and the car was either free or salvage. Your project is completely different. Based on your purchase price, you still have plenty of room. You should pull the pistons, hone, and probably install new rings. Hopefully the bearing were well oiled. If not maybe a run in and then change the inserts. Have to look at the journals. Then there are all of the passages. Check a few out if there is any crud, the block and crank probably need to be cleaned. Really have to check all of them. I know you don't want to hear it but for your project do you really want to cut some corners on the engine? If it's just to make sure the engine is built to your standards. Expense won't be too bad, just the time to teardown, clean, inspect, and rebuild. There shouldn't be any machining or many new parts required.
  8. So this post is open to other people. Too bad I have nothing to say.
  9. Anybody have any used pads and rotors to give him. It doesn't matter if they don't match and are grooved. It's better than metal to metal.
  10. Isn't that a terrible feeling when you fall out of the listings book.
  11. I just read it in Road & Track (sorry) Carnegie Mellon University did a study and confirmed it's the conversation with a remote person not the cell phone that distracts the driver. They cite as I did the indifference of the other end of the phone, but I will also add conversation is more than an audio function. Without the visual input the mind needs to concentrate more to just the sounds to understand what was said or meant. Now roads will need to have pull over areas, since alll of the conversations are important.
  12. This is how people get paid. Making up issues to sound the alarm. If they are stored properly there is very little issue. What is okay, 1 month, or 1 year, 3 years, but not 6? So if you found a 0 mile Comanche in controlled storage, you're not going to buy it because it is 20 years old? How much would you pay for a NOS fuel tank sending unit? What I really don't understand is few tires are even in production that long. They typically redesign them. Then sell the left overs at left over prices. There is no issue here. The liability lawyers would be all over them. The manufactures can't risk that again. They know tires.
  13. It looks like the factory skid plate protects the tie rod or is it to keep branches from popping up into the radiator? I quess some projectile headed for the oil pan would be deflected down into the axle. Hopefully below it. Or is it to simply slide (skid) over a rock? I can see why you add the reinforcement. Never mind it looks like I anwered my own question.

  15. It must be a cover up, product liability and all. I'm positive I read a few years back that it was 40 days, but now everything says 40th formula. I quess my brother in law got this one right.
  16. Now that you learned what WD stands for the 40 is for 40 days. Noah wouldn't have needed the Ark if WD40 was available.
  17. I just wish I had the time and funds available to do the project and then I would do something else. As my dad used to say "Won't make it run any better." The Bejing Jeep is interesting in that the Cherokee lived a few more years. The best thing they did in my opinion is the added wheelbase. The 4 door XJ is just a bit awkward for the back seat. A few extra inches would make a world of difference. The irony is the 4 door is what gave the XJ it's initial success.
  18. I think the same way. Comedians cover it. 'I'm walking to the mailbox, I'm opening the door, I'm stepping back..........' You used to have to plan your day and think ahead. We don't have to think any more (a good move for some people) because now we annoy somebody, somewhere, anytime. 'Do you want the red one with the long neck or the short fat blue one?' 'I'm ready to be picked up now.' So as a parent you're off to pick them up where they were supposed to be. Only to not be able to find them. Good thing you have a phone, 'Where are you?' Now it's my fault. Just another item that was developed and marketed because industry can and wanted to, but there was no need for it. Mankind developed everything and conquered much without constant communication. Sure would have saved Paul Revere's horse if he'd just texted everyone. Yes there is a time and place for it, but not the endless dribble you usually hear.
  19. The difference with a phone conversation and one with a passenger is the guy on the other end is not in the car with you and has no knowledge of the events you should be paying attention to so he does not pause or undestand why you paused. What needs to be done is the phone should be integrated into the vehicle like the new models are doing. However, it needs to be made such that a call can not be answered or made while the vehicle is in motion.
  20. The side skirt of the arm prevents the tab from moving and once it is pulled out it now holds the blade off the windshield. Little bit of a safety feature. The spring loaded arm prevents the tab from falling out of engagement so that the arms won't work off the spline.
  21. You might as well check to see that all of the tubes are open. There are some check valves to make the light function properly. If the check valves are still good and there is a plugged line, the light may stay on. My clog was in the metal lines from the right side of the engine bay down towards the axle.
  22. This takes me back to my first replies. Check the fuse block. There is one marked trans. Even the manuals need this fuse to make the reverse lights work.
  23. But first pull the blades off the windshield to the stops in the arms. Now the tab will be free to be pulled.
  24. A couple of guys have poked the radiator with screwdrivers, but I'd go with pulling the lower hose. Bit messy.
  25. I fixed mine on the XJ years ago with some caulking that the builders left behind. I think it was urethane based. Now, I've replaced the chrome bumpy one on my 4 speed MJ with a 5 speed one. It's been over a year and there have been no changes the knob hasn't changed to 4 speed nor has the trans changed to a 5 speed and it's still loose. Nothing is happening. I'm cetaintly not going to pay for a knob (or fix it) for a trans I rather not have or take out a perfectly good trans to match a broken knob. How can I sleep with this on my mind? Then of course the Federal website that had fuel mileages stated that 1988 4 cylinder, 4 speed got better mileage than the 5 speed. Is this a hijack, sorry? It's a shame synchro mesh and helical gears were developed because with today's electronics we could have green lights or rpm control to match gear rpm so that straight cut gears would slide right in. Gee no skill in that either.
