  1. Finally made some picture worthy progress. Finished the d-ring mounts. Now that I had reinforced the outer mounts of the steering box bolts, I also wanted to get rid of the crappy aluminum inner spacer before it exploded. I've got a C-Rok spacer on my XJ that made a perfect template. :D Front bumper is on! :jump: The fairlead barely sticks out further than the d-ring mounts. I've got a hawse fairlead that will eventually go on once the wire rope goes bad and is replaced with synthetic. Willy
  2. Are you planning on tying the rockers into the unirail? I've read that without that there isn't enough support to prevent the rockers from bending up quite a bit. Willy

  6. Dana 18: Are you planning on installing front AND rear axles that are offset to the passenger side? If so, you will need to find out if it will even bolt up to your transmission. I know that there are at least three different versions of the D18. I believe the biggest difference between each is the different sized intermediate shafts. You would want to find one of the later ones with the larger shaft. Given all of this, would it be worth all the work? To me, no. But, you will have to answer that for yourself. Dana 20: This one would only require a front axle with a passenger side differential. You will still need to find out if it will work with your transmission. Willy

  12. Check the bushings in the shift linkage. I think there is a bushing at each pivot point. These could be worn or missing. If the motor mounts have never been replaced I can just about guarantee they are falling apart and need to be. This will allow the drivetrain to twist within the chassis and can contribute to the linkage popping out of the bracket. A bad transmission mount may do the same thing. If none of these fix it, get rid of the stupid stock design. I think Novak and Skyjacker make replacement shifter linkages that mount to the drivetrain as it should instead of the body. Willy

  15. This is actually an M170. The civilian version is known as the CJ-6. There is no such thing as a CJ-9. Jeep skipped it and went from CJ-8 to CJ-10. Not sure what happened to the CJ-9 designation, maybe an in house prototype that was destroyed? Willy

  18. Lots of welding over the past week. Tripled up the d-ring mounts to 3/4". Still need to weld the third piece on each side. Willy
  19. I used 1/4" plates at the bumper attachments and 2.5" x 1/4" angle between. I plasma cut the holes for the lugs and welded them on the back side. You may want to consider running that further back to the large holes on each side. Like this: The bumper attachment points are not really intended for tow points. It's just sheet metal that will rip apart fairly easily. Willy
  20. It doesn't. I would think so. I would just about guarantee that the camber was off before you installed the axle. The lift would not effect that. Willy

  22. This is incorrect. I believe your are confusing your terms. Caster and pinion angle are adjusted by the control arms, but caster is completely unrelated to camber. Camber angle can be visualized as the tilt of the top of the tire to the bottom when looking from the front of the vehicle. Caster angle can be visualized as the tilt of the rotational axis of the tire when viewed from the side of the vehicle. There is no camber adjustment on our vehicles. Willy Not incorrect. When you change the Caster...Camber changes with it. Camber is adjusted by changing caster on a solid axle vehicle. Caster & pinion angle are the same thing. When you adjust a control arm or add shims to it for alignment, you are changing the caster/pinion angle and when you change that...the camber changes as well. You cannot adjust caster without changing the camber unless you remove and reposition the knuckles on the tubes. I have done this many times now and have learned the hard way that a very small caster change can have devastating results on expensive tires because of the change in camber that results :cheers: . I dropped my pinion/caster by 2 degrees and completely destroyed the outer half of my nearly new 35" Xterrains in 3 months :oops: . I think you are still having trouble differentiating between caster and camber. As Eagle stated, camber should be zero degrees on our axles. This is regardless of your caster angle or pinion angle - which are also not the same but related as Eagle stated. Your caster angle can be 7, 90, 180, 0 degrees, or anything else and your camber angle will be the same as long as your axle isn't bent or damaged in some other way. Willy
  23. Yes, the alignment was very off on mine. I had to redrill several of the holes to get it to fit. :roll: If I did it again I would get a Riddler cover. That's what I have on the front. I really wanted the Riddler cover for the 8.8 in the first place, but they weren't production ready when I needed one. Willy
