Thanks for the tip Jeff ... So vicegrips are definitely out then, right? (Kidding!) I called my garage today and they're going to install the U-joints. Dropping the driveshaft off tomorrow morning and will pick it up on my way home. Should be back in action tomorrow night.

Yes, the cup was gone. The OD of the end of the u-joint would have been swimming under that steel strap, if I'd managed to get everything back up. I'll look in daylight. I didn't see any clean, broken metal on anything, but it was dark, I was on my back under the truck with a flashlight in my teeth and my bifocals weren't helping matters.

That's the right tool.

Me thinks the u-joint is junk. Any special tools needed to replace the u-joints?

I dropped the rear driveshaft pulling into my driveway tonight. I'm not a mechanic, but I think I can handle this. I just need some guidance and a few answers. I swiped the following picture from another site, so you have a visual ... What ever covers the end of the U-joint that fits under the U shaped flat steel plate is GONE (which problably explains the nasty vibration I felt right before the drive shaft dropped). I could back out the bolts that hold that plate on by hand. I literally coasted into the end of my driveway. I limped the truck into its spot by putting it in part time 4wd, which brings me to question No.1 ... was that a mistake? Second, I foolishly separated the front of driveshaft from the ... transfer case? Yes? Whatever the doohicky is the front of the driveshaft goes in. It puked about a cup of fluid. I did this because I was trying to align the u-joint and couldn't spin the shaft. I figured if I could just bolt the thing back up, I could yard drive the truck to position it for repair. Question No. 2 ... does the front of the driveshaft just find a seat? It didn't spin when I put it back in. Question No. 3 ... I'm guessing I have to have both rear tires off the ground to line up the new u-joint with the rear end. Yes? help

It's been listed several times over the past few years. I contacted them and coordinating a time to see it was a hassle for the seller.

It was a nice day in southern New Hampshire ... warm, dry ... time to paint! Hoped I might get a good day to do a spray in bedliner. Doing it on "the cheap", so I know I'm really just making it pretty, but hey, the is a "clean up" thread. Stocked up. Bought a 6 pack (of Rustoleum Spray in Bedliner). Each can covers 20sf. I had sanded surface rust spots off a while ago and hit it with acetone, then primed the spot.

So, I looked under the carpet and remedied that! Next order of business is to do Cruiser's tips. I also have a dash cluster that I plan to harvest gauges from to replace the idiot lights. I'd like to keep the existing PRNDL cluster and populate it with the gauges from the donor. I'm sure that's been done before. Links will be helpful!

Wrapped up installation of the new carpeting and permanently installed the console yesterday. Reinstalled the plastics and buckets today. Couple things ... need natural light. The flash on my camera is making the red in the woodgrain trim pop. The brown inserts in the seats matches the trim really well, but it's kind of a valour material so the camera washes the color out. Also, there really is new carpet in there ... the mats, console and seats almost totally obscure it. I guess it will remain clean!

You be our guinea pig and let us know, I'm in the market for carpet soon too. Guinea pig reporting. Should have looked into the "mass backing" they wrote of in the ad. The jute backing they wrote of was a two foot wide strip that went from one foot well, over the tunnel and into the next footwell. Nothing under, or behind the seats. Not a huge deal because I loaded the interior with "HushMat", then foil heat and sound pad. The carpet itself is decent quality and the color is perfect. Put the carpet in today (mostly). Layed it out in the sun for a couple hours whilst doing other tasks. It was easy to work with and for the most part it went in as well as could be expected for a first timer. I still have to open the holes for the passenger seat and the seat belts.
