  1. As JeepcoMJ said, it's a lot of work. Here's some insight if you're curious. http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f46/86-comanche-dd-159524/index3/#post2533898
  2. That's a nice looking '87, but the grille is upside down... All these CL posts for MJ's seem to have upside down grilles... what gives? lol
  3. Probably not. I don't think the stock cross member is strong enough, even with more plating to support that kind of thing. I'm sure a Clayton crossmember could be had for a reasonable price.
  4. Meant to ask you Cruiser... is there any potential MPG gains by doing the elimination and ground update?
  5. Where is the C201 and C202 connectors and what are they for?
  6. Do you have some pictures? :brows:
  7. Nice, I right over in Clayton. If I see any MJ's for sale, I'll let you know. You on facebook?
  8. Glad you got it resolved.
  9. Tackling the 4.0 swap in an '86, are ya? :brows: But that does look purdy. That AMC-20 is a rarity as well.
  10. :agree: This.
  11. Not to get off topic, but PFC, I see you have the dual diaphragm XJ booster and the later model steel valve cover. Now time for the open style cooling conversion lol.
  12. Did you swap distributors? They are different between the Renix and HO ones. But, assuming you did, make sure you set it down in the block correctly. I found this out the hard way. SAME symptoms you're describing. I was one tooth off on my timing and had to redo it. Referred to the following.
  13. I think, at a minimum, we can all agree that eliminating it certainly will not hurt anything. That, in conjunction with the sensor ground update and tweaking sensors to give the ECU correct parameters, will not make anything worse.
  14. Where in NC are you located?
  15. I did it on my XJ and the occasional "early morning stall" has stopped so far.
  16. Yes, I sniffed my exhaust like a bloodhound. Was definitely left over coolant. Doesn't smell like it anymore. My guess was it was still caked into the combs of the cat. Edit: The first line in my reply makes me sound like one of those junky huffer kids... Oops. I just mean I wanted to be thorough.
  17. Synthetic 75w-140 for towing, 75w-90 for DD'ing. On my XJ, I run 75w-90 in my front diff (open). However, I'm running 75w-140 in my rear since I have a Spartan and I do as much wheeling as I can in 2WD until I'm forced to use 4WD. Occasionally I pull a trailer also.
  18. Exactly... I was starting to get PO'd, then I stopped to think about it logically and gave it a few minutes. After a while it stopped and checking the oil and coolant verified there was no longer an issue. Been driving her all day and so far so good, but I'm not going to call it just yet lol. Paranoid still.
  19. That's exactly what I did. I drove it around yesterday before I posted this. Drained the oil and put fresh in it with another new filter about 3 hours ago. Been driving it and checking the oil periodically for color and smell. No more steam out the exhaust, so I guess I was just burning off residual stuff in cat and muffler yesterday.
  20. Try to ask off anyway lol. But thanks, I hope the old girl keep chugging along with no more issues for a long while. I did get the Spartan in while it was getting the head work done. I can hear it on sharp turns but nothing too bad. It's definitely working. Keep tearing up my gravel driveway when I turn out onto the road.
  21. As title says, Uwharrie trip Fri, May 30th - Sun, June 1st. If I don't work Friday morning, I'll be aiming to meet up at the Outpost at 11:00 am. Otherwise, I'll be out there later that evening. I'll be driving this XJ and my buddy Sam will likely be driving that Yota. My name is Shawn. PM if you want my number. Add me on FB for more updated trip event info. www.facebook.com/onlyinajeep726 Should be a good turn out.
  22. Ok guys, I have a question. I just got the XJ back to running after a recent head swap. The old head was cracked, leaking coolant into cylinder 2 and eventually into the oil. Question is, I put new oil in it (obviously) but after running in and driving it a few miles, I decided to drain some of the new oil into a pan. What I found was a bit of off colored oil but not really milky. Smelled faintly of residual coolant. If it helps, when I started it initially, it was pouring steam out of the exhaust but doesn't seem to be doing so after a 8 mile round trip drive. Should I go ahead and change the oil again, or run/drive it a few more times and then change to fresh oil?
