Had to fight my 11 year for control of the remote. I wanted to watch it, she wanted to watch Zoey 101. Then I remembered I am the parent

MJ's with Gambler Rim? **Update ** Tell me what you think!
mvusse replied to SuperWade2's topic in The Pub
Never been a big fan of those rims, but they look better than the stock ones. -
I checked local JYs yesterday for a front bumper. Old one was chrome, but not salvageable, but with the new front I think a black one would look better. One place has a bumper supposedly off a Comanche Limited, including end caps and brackets for $50. BUT, it is green! I thought they only came in black and chrome? Has anybody heard of front bumpers other than black or chrome on our trucks?

Well, my new front arrived earlier this week. I got it installed this morning, but since it was 5 degrees outside when I got up I decided to drive it to work so I could do it in a heated shop. Here's the pictures: Before I got started. All the lights are held on with zip ties: Everything removed: The new front (of 89 XJ): Making sure the lights and wiring are okay. Turned out both side marker bulbs needed replaced: I know I've seen the top bracket I need somewhere in this mess: It's on: All done: Now I just need a fender and bumper: The new front is not as nice as the old one used to be (no chrome) and doesn't have the wiring fro the fog lights. I did keep the old harness in case I ever get new ones. I also noticed the side markers work as turn signals as well. They blink opposite the main ones. On the old one they didn't blink at all. All in all about 90 minutes work, 30 if which was trying to get that mangled bumper off.

A pressure test will tell you if the radiator is good or not. If it is plugged up, you can have a radiator shop ream it out, or you can replace it, If you're being a smart alec, ignore this reply.

Is the fan working? If electric, is it running at all? If mechanical, is the clutch okay? Could also be a plugged radiator, or a cracked head gasket.

My boss has a 94 F150 with <90,000 miles and the same problem. One side broke off completely, the other side is still hanging on by a 2" tab of rust. He can't be bothered to get it fixed, so the truck has been parked collecting snow. Didn't know this was as common as it seems to be, though.

I know of shops that add 1 qt transmission fluid and the rest oil when doing an oil change. ATF is also used as a break in oil in quite a few engines (including lawn mowers, not just cars). ATF has detergents, but so does regular motor oil. The good thing about ATF is that it lubricates much better than oil. Bad thing is that it burns a lot easier and doesn't like high temperatures as much, making it last much shorter. You could try using ATF to clean the gunk out (cheaper than synthetic oil), but I don't know if it works as well as synthetic. I personally wouldn't run ATF in my engine for more than 500 miles before changing it again. -
I have had timing chain problems where the chain was fine, but the nylons teeth on the sprocket had wore down. The crank sprocket was moving the chain, but it was just sliding over the cam sprocket...

I got a plastic one from Advance, part number 84716, cost me like $8 or so. It is listed as a Ford part, but it works in Jeeps as well. The only problem is that the wire colors are wrong: splice black to black, brown to blue and blue to brown... I have dealt with metal ones before on other cars; they kept rusting and in my opinion are junk.

I have had my MJ for just a few weeks now, ad noticed the sucker never gets above ~150 degrees. Took of the thermostat housing to check the thermostat and possibly put a hotter one in, turns out it already has 195 degree one and seems to be working fine. Now I am thinking (before seeing this thread) my dashboard gauge may not be accurate, but couldn't think of a way to test it. May have to look for one of those thermometers. -
Without being there to see and hear exactly what it does (including rythm) my bet is on the timing chain/sprockets.

Looks like you need to invest in some better tires...

I can't believe I lived in Canada for 6 years and forgot about Canadian Tire! Yes, if they have the parts, that would probably be the cheapest place.
-
Might give Carquest a shot too, if there's one in your area. I know there are some in Canada, but don't know how widespread they are.

My 87 has the AMC logo on the keys AND on the low fuel light on the dash.

A few years ago I drove around in my 79 F100 without a bed for a few weeks while working on it. The polce never said anything about fenders, but then, I did have mud flaps behind the wheels. One thing to be aware of is without any weight on the rear axle, you take off *slowly*. It is real easy to spin the tires, and doing so without any weight will cause wheel hop. That's a good way to break a u-joint on the drive shaft, as I found out. Granted an MJ is not an F100, but the physics are the same.

just wanted to say howdy, and show my mj off

Can't wait to see what it looks like after it's all finished and painted. Post lots of pics after you're done! -
Thanks to mfpdm who pointed out the Ebay auction when I inquired about the grille he had for sale, I now own a complete front of an 89 Cherokee to replace what's left of the one on my 87 Comanche. Total including shipping was a bit under $80. Think I got a good deal on that, or did I pay too much? Note: I'm in OH, the item is from RI. Nothing here from WI...

Voltmeter on my dash sits right near the top of the normal range, and drops down a bit with lights and heater fan running. Too cold out right now to see what the number on that spot of the gauge is, as well as test the actual voltage across the battery with a tester.

The tangent of angle z is 12/22. The left hand angle of y is the same as z Therefore the tangent of left hand of y is 12/22 this means that xw/12=12/22 =>xw=12x12/22 =>xw=6.55 I've been called a nerd many times in the past, but being good at math finally paid off! (And that's 20 years after high school...) EDIT: what does this have to do with Comanches?

My new to me '87 Pioneer 4x4 4.0 automatic, just bought it two days ago. The previous owner broadsided a deer at 55mph and lost his license in the process (DUI). So he sold the truck he's not allowed to drive anymore to help pay the fines. I paid $400 for it. Engines runs okay, with an intermittent miss (once every 10 minutes or so). 4x4 works, but the idiot light stays on even when in 2hi. Has a brand new radiator and water pump. Just today I noticed it has a broken leaf on the rear suspension, and the gas tank leaks (after putting $60 into it). It also has the obvious front end damage, but the frame is fine, and I need to check out a scary wobble/shake in the front. It happened when exiting the freeway and coasting from 70 to about 50, went away when I hit the brakes. Need to check the ball joints. This will become my DD since the other vehicle (the white one) only gets 10 mpg around town and 15 on the highway. Projects: #1 gas tank #2 front steering suspension #3 front end body damage #4 rear suspension #5 exhaust (glass pack?) After that? Lift some, cut some, get bigger tires. It currently runs 235/75R15 (29") on what I believe to be 8" (stock?) rims. Marcel
