2 Wheel Drive To 4 Wheel Drive Conversion
GirsMJ86 replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The early AX-15s had an internal slave up to '93 I believe, the later ones have external. These were pre-bled closed units as well. As for your 2.8 coming out of a Sonoma, the 2.8 was never changed at all in the trucks. The 2.8 that was offered in the trucks, from first year to the last year, were Gen 1 versions. So no matter the year they were prone to throwing rods and such. The Gen 2 2.8 which fixed these issues was only offered transverse in FWD vehicles and can not be used in a RWD platform. Just a bit of knowledge for the day. -
This wouldn't happen to be the one that was on CL a little while back would it? lol Doubt you'd find one THAT nice, but there are some nice daily driver ones around. If I could find a matching front in that nice of shape I'd trade ya the black one on the rig I hope to be getting soon, but I refuse to resort to after market chrome bumpers. Also, wrong section?

It cleans all the gunk out so that when you change the oil, the fresh stuff is going into a cleaner engine then if you only drained the oil. I've always done this right before an oil change, don't think adding it while doing a fresh oil change would be very beneficial because it is just going to start cleaning and expedite the process of the new oil getting dirty. It's mainly used as a cleaner. I normally will dump a full can in a nearly empty tank of gas at fill up at least twice a year. I did the oil trick once and it was extremely dark oil when I then changed it, afterwards I switched to pure synthetic. I've never done the TB trick.

Found Another Mj, Do Yall Think This Is A Decent Deal?
GirsMJ86 replied to badazzelanore's topic in The Pub
Sounds like a good deal to me. Never personally seen a true Metric Tonne that was a SWB, which is awesome by itself IMO. Pics? -
Wow, another '86 only thing huh? Chrysler really had some issues with some of the options AMC offered didn't they? Really going to hate getting rid of this rig just for all the oddities I could swap to another, funds just won't allow that. :wall:

Sweet, can't wait to see some pics. Mind telling me that color code as well? Got any plans for it, like a mild lift with some meatier tires or anything? KJ light bar perhaps? :brows:

2 Wheel Drive To 4 Wheel Drive Conversion
GirsMJ86 replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yea, I think I kind of jumped the gun Pete. He only wants to do a 4wd conversion, but if he is yanking everything out he might as well ditch that 2.8 anyways. Does require more work though so that's the downside and he just may not have the time, money, or patience for. I was mainly trying to specify the AX-5/AX-15 info... originally anyways. lol -

Should specify that you can't use the AX-5 you have. There are 4x4 version of them, my rig is a dead give away of that. The main reason Pete is saying grab an XJ with the 2.5 is because, like he said, you can grab one from any year and it is also regarded as a better motor than the 2.8 since it doesn't have 20 miles of vac hose or a habit for throwing rods. You won't find a 2.5 with the AX-15 behind it unless it was swapped in by an owner, the 2.5 came with the AX-4 or AX-5. I believe the AX-4 was eventually dropped though so later on you'll only get the AX-5. The newer you go though (91+) the more work it will take since that is when they got upgraded to Chrysler electronics and fuel injection. I was debating swapping a 2.5 or 4.0 from an XJ into my rig before I decided to just sell it, I was advised to stay away from 1996 because of the way the OBD system is done up. The 2.5 and 2.8 make roughly the same HP and torque early on, late in the 2.5 life it might have been bumped up a bit. I will say though that with a fuel injection kit the 2.8 seems to have more going for it over stock 2.8s and 2.5s I've messed with. If you don't go the route of grabbing an entire donor vehicle, this would be a great time to swap out the 2.8 with a 3.4 from a RWD car like a Camaro or Firebird. It's basically the exact same block as the 2.8 so it'll just bolt right in and the same transmissions and such can be used with it. It makes more power though and is more reliable. Sparks plugs and such are a royal pain to change though and it does have it's share of issues, the timing chain being the big one so make sure to grab one that recently had that replaced or do it before swapping it in. -

I currently have an entire fuel injected 2.8L AX-5 4x4 truck for sale that would be a great donor candidate. :brows: Hey, can't blame a guy for trying. lol Listen to Pete on doing the upgrade to 4wd though, he's done it himself a few times and knows a thing or two. -
I don't mind the older Libby's but the new ones I don't care for. Always liked the demin-ish blue offered on them. A friend just recently bought a 2012 and I keep calling it his "soccer mom" car and even told him I'm sticking one of those decals on his rear window along with the stick figure family. A 5spd though, that's not something you see everyday in a Libby.

Mine aren't remote or power yet they break away.

I'd wager they are chromed plastic. The factory chrome mirrors are a chromed metal skin over the standard black mirrors or something along those lines anyways. I've never looked at them too hard, I just know they are metal and there is still black plastic around the opening where the mirror is. After almost 28 years my chrome ones still look great, a little pitted from stone chips and the fact they appear to be pot metal, but still nice considering the age. I've personally never seen ones that don't "fold", all mine have been the type gomorgo described. Where they don't really fold but will flex back or forth if they get hit.

Seeing those ones Don, I can understand why you ended up getting rid of them honestly. Good idea, but boy would that get to me with time. Looks out of place for sure seeing it as the focus of the image. Maybe wouldn't be so bad if they were black like the factory ones are. Think some powder coated aluminum would be overkill? :brows: Maybe Monstaliner would be the more cost effective choice.

High Fuel Economy Engine Swap Options?
GirsMJ86 replied to Oyaji's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I keep hearing rumors of a small diesel going into the Ram 1500 and Wrangler, supposedly the one that is currently offered in the Grand. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 Engine w/ 240 horsepower, 420lb ft torque, and 30 hwy mpg I would guess. No clue if it's any good or not, but maybe someone should go buy a Grand to yank the engine out and test it out? EDIT: I guess the rumors are partially true at least, no signs of it in the Wrangler yet. http://www.ramtrucks.com/en/ecodiesel/ -
The only acceptable use of diamond plate I've seen so far... is the entrance sill in that teal XJ.

Mo Cl '91 Eliminator $500
GirsMJ86 replied to danbyrambler's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
If only it didn't need fixed, I'd grab that puppy and make it a 4x4. -
 Don saying he doesn't care for something shiny that could be added to his rig?! In all seriousness though... NO. This was a big thing over on the FSJ forums since those door panels are worse than the ones in the MJs. They were also using large pieces of black textured plastic.

High Fuel Economy Engine Swap Options?
GirsMJ86 replied to Oyaji's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:agree: with Eagle My '91 Eliminator 4.0L Auto 4x4 got 25mpg highway, so what you're wanting would totally be do-able with the 4.0L and a low rpm cam like Eagle said. That rig was not stock either, bet it would have done better if it was. I did run 91 octane though most of the time, and it was a Jasper motor with relatively low miles for the vehicle age. A diesel swap would the best thing for top mileage, and is something I've thought about plenty. The main problem seems to be though the weight of the diesel blocks that will fit our rigs, plus the uniframe needs to be reinforced. A diesel swap is much more something to do to a J-Truck than our little MJs IMO. That is to go with a modern block that actually makes the swap worth it to me. I know next to nothing about this so I'm just kind of tossing this out here. Have you looked at propane conversion? Not sure if that nets any amazing mileage or not, or if it's even worth the cost, but that's another option if it is. -
2.1 Turbo Diesel 1987 Comanche!!!
GirsMJ86 replied to TieDyeJK8's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Yup, figuring out how to post pics and putting some actual info would be very helpful. Probably out of my price range but I'm back to looking for a rig since my latest deal just fell through. -
No issues here with the guy I take things to if I just don't feel like doing something. He has worked on several things I've owned without gripe, including the AWD Talon I had which kept having leaky turbo syndrome. One time I took an MJ to someone other then him, and the guy had the nerve to tell me he was going to charge more than I paid for the whole truck to fix something, after taking a month or two to even get around to looking at it. I plain and simply could tell he didn't want to work on the thing, so I said screw it and took my truck home.

Put a quarantine bubble around it unless you want the rest of yours to catch what this one has.

That tire isn't on there at all.

If you want a direct link to that post, you can click the #1 in the username bar and use that link. It's still this thread in the end but ensures it goes to post #1.

Other than the original post in my '91 Eliminator thread it isn't anywhere else.
