  2. Well, it still uses about the same amount of oil it always has, so I don't know that it did much for that. But about the same time this happened, the oil pressure started spiking, completely pinning the gauge, but then goes back to normal after about a minute or so. It does that a couple times an hour, unrelated to vehicle speed or rpm, so my guess is there are probably a couple chunks of something floating around and clogging the outtake of the pump and then getting blasted out. (that or there are some gremlins in the 30 year old wires) I've changed the oil myself a few times since, and there's usually a soft lump or two of sludge that comes out. But no metal shavings yet. Mind you, this is an '80's sbc we're talking about here. It's almost an accomplishment to kill one of those...
  3. Yeah, mine had the quick disconnect, too. It took me a bit to figure out how to make it work, but once I did it came off pretty easily. It also took me a bit to figure out how to get the radiator half off and put it on the new rad. All in all it felt like it was more work prepping the new rad to go in than it was to pull the old one off. I also had to transfer the rubber bushings/mounts over to the new one, and then retap the studs on the top because they'd been painted over. I was actually surprised by how easily the rad went in and out. It seems like every time I try to do something on my MJ something breaks, or won't go back in right, or whatever. The entire time I was working on it, I had that feeling that I had to be doing something wrong because there was no way it could be that easy... but so far no leaks and nothing's fallen off, so I guess I win?
  4. Looks like 174,xxx from the pic of the odometer.
  5. A couple winters ago, my teenaged sister had been regularly driving my Dad's van, a known oil burning/leaking Chevy 305, but kept neglecting to check the oil. One day it didn't start. So she checked the oil and of course there was almost none. So she poured in the "oil in the white jug that was in the back of the van". And the van fired up. (Thank god for low-oil safety switches, eh?) About a month and a half later, my dad went to top off the atf, also known to leak very slowly around the pan, and there was nothing in the jug. Turns out my sister had just grabbed a jug in the dark without looking at it, and dumped nearly a gallon of atf into the crankcase. He freaked out and called me, and I told him to change the oil. Apparently it came out a "dark rusty colour". But the van still runs fine to this day despite running on mostly ATF for about 2300km... my Dad's even been dd'ing it since my sister wrote off his car in January. That's my only experience with atf in the oil that I know of. Didn't seem to have adversely affected the engine.
  6. Yeah, looks like a FWD 3800 that was spun 90 degrees... Getting that supercharger to breath must have been a b*@$£ and then some...
  7. A headache? Really? Must be the '97+ front end. It took me a half-hour to pull the rad out of my '91 4.0, and everything was straight forward. Everything just unbolted and lifted off in about six pieces. The marker lights and headlight bezels had to come off, but I left all the other trim pieces on the header panel, and then the fan shroud and e-fan lifted out with the upper rad support.
  8. Also, if I drive in a fuel-use conscious manner (which I typically don't) I've seen 19mpg with my 4.0.
  9. The 2.8's are known for reliability issues, low power, and poor fuel economy, but that's the only reason anyone would recommend changing it. So long as you can find a tranny and tcase to bolt onto it, you're good.
  10. All i can say is that there's less rust on my 305,000 mile mj's frame that spent its life in a climate where the roads see salt from october till it's washed off by rain in may. You wouldn't be able to put plates on your rig in my province.

    Rock Auto Codes

Edit:: oops. Didn't read what you wrote. This is only a 5% code. Sorry. 1751601414864704 Expires Nov 24, 2013
  12. I've seen some that are completely solid and don't fold, and pulled one off an XJ at a jy (if memory serves it was a '93) but then I went around to the driver's side, it was just the same one I described above. Call me OCD but I prefer the shaky rear view to mismatched mirrors... so I left it behind even though it was in awesome shape. Actually, come to think of it, I left it in the bed of a '92 MJ...
  13. My '91 has mirrors like that, only not chrome, they're black plastic. There are two vertical bars on the mirror (I think they're metal but I'd have to go check) that clip into the plastic mount, one on either side of the adjuster cables. It's not really a folding hinge, per se, as it's not adjustable at all, but if you give the mirror a big enough knock in either direction, the bar on the side that got hit will pop out of its clip, and the mirror will fold back with the other bar as a hinge. But don't go out and try it as it will stretch the adjuster cables, and likely the adjuster mechanism will be toast after a couple hits like that. Neither of the adjusters on my MJ work, and one of the plastic clips is cracked so it doesn't hold the mirror as tightly as it could, and it vibrates as I'm going down the road. I wouldn't shy away from them because of the way they attach, as they seem fairly solid (mine have obviously been knocked around a ton in the 300k miles), but I've been meaning to replace mine and all the XJ's and MJ's I've found in wrecking yards with those mirrors either have solid clips and non-functional adjusters, or else they look like someone took a sledge hammer to them.
  14. I've always wanted a smaller diesel engined vehicle, although in terms of availability over here, it's pretty well limited to VW's and Merc's. (My current "dream for next vehicle" which may or may not ever happen would be to swap a VW TDI into a Lada Niva) Terawombat's currently working on swapping a Mazda MZR-CD 2.0L into his MJ. Maybe check that out. http://comancheclub.com/topic/38486-diesel-engine/
  15. My '91 has one... The issue you'll face is taking part of a rather rare '92 Comanche to put in a common old XJ... Just kidding. go for it.
  16. Because you don't want to see the terrible rust, or because you're worried it'll fold in half while you're underneath?
  17. Just copy the url of a youtube video and paste it into the reply box. Should do the above. Your browser may try to paste the url in as a link, and if it does, just select the address in the reply box and hit the "unlink" button (looks like a breaking link in a chain, between the "link" and "image" buttons in the bottom row)
  18. Was catching up on fuelly today, and they popped up a message congratulating me on my best mpg ever. I didn't actually look at the number until later. I think that's the best an MJ's ever done (and ever will) on a tank of gas, eh? :rotfl2: Yeah, I went back and corrected the data... shucks, right?
  19. My advice right now, as a college student: college money should be spent on college... if you need a vehicle, get a cheap econobox and save up your money for fixing the MJ if you can. Seriously sucks about your MJ. And dumbass drivers. I've a had a couple pretty close calls myself with idiots running reds, only I was never in my MJ at the time. Don't know what I'd do if something happened to mine. MPI would likely cut me a check for $100 and I'd be @#$%ed without a vehicle and a 10 mile trip to school... Hope that's not an issue for you!!
  20. Apple may be able to track you, but with Apple maps they'll be looking for you somewhere between Guam and Hawaii...
  21. Cost was also what drove me to the 235/75-15s. When I first got my MJ, there were three different brands of tires in two sizes, with varying tread levels. As a broke @$$ college student, I was definitely attracted to the 235's I got being $40/corner less than the 225's the owner's manual recommended. The General Grabber AT2's I got rub a little on the driver's side lower control arm at full lock, but otherwise they look and fit great, and they're pretty awesome on snow and ice for a tire you can run year-round. I've put almost 10,000 miles on them and no issues, either, although that reminds me they're overdue for a rotation...
  22. Must have been a while ago, then! Actually, now that I look into it, FSAE West as it was called only started up in 2006, so not really all that long ago... But right now, there are 12 events around the world sanctioned by SAE international, 3 in the US, 6 in Europe, and one each in Brazil, Australia and Japan. When I was down in Lincoln, a couple reps from Chrysler came out to talk to our graduating team members about jobs, but none of them were interested because they already had jobs. To be honest, I'm mostly just in this for the fun, but one of the other things that keeps me around is that no one ever in the history of our team has not had a job within the first couple months of graduating, and everyone's been able to get a decent summer job, too.
  23. That's awesome. I'm guessing from the 113 number that'd be FSAE Michigan? I'm with the University of Saskatchewan team, Huskie Motorsports, and while I think the team's been to Michigan once or twice, we usually go to FSAE Lincoln (formerly California). Don't know if I'd be allowed by the team to post a build thread on here (we're incredibly careful about what gets published) but the build usually is fairly well documented on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/huskiemotorsports) and we typically put up a video or two on the YouTubes (http://www.youtube.com/HuskieMotorsports) every now and again. There's a bunch of stuff from the last couple years on there, if you want to check it out. I've posted a couple of the videos in the pub section before, shortly after they came out, but didn't get too much interest. We've got a couple guys pretty well dedicated to getting our name out this year, so I'm expecting that the number and quality of videos is going to increase, but we'll see.
  24. Well, just to provide some follow-up, I turned the guy down. Between school, my Formula SAE hobby and the work needed on my own MJ, I'm probably not going to have much time to get it running, and even then, I worked out that once I put plates on it, absolute best case scenario is that it won't pay for itself in fuel savings for over a year. Also, I just remembered that half the reason I was looking for another car in the first place was so I could have a back seat, and, um... yeah.
