Would A 2Wd Tranny Work On A 4X4 System?
Geonovast replied to Zenobian_84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
88 was still internal. If it's external, then someone converted it. -
I know with the old software, you used to be able to search by author, and restrict to the first post of a topic.. essentially threads they started.

Weird Transmission Problem...
Geonovast replied to Lee21490's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If cruiser54 doesn't pop in with the procedure, PM him. I know all you need is a volt meter to test it at closed and WOT, but I don't know the ranges, and he's got the test procedures for the sensors on speed dial. -
Weird Transmission Problem...
Geonovast replied to Lee21490's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I would tackle the TPS first. -
Everything will be fine as long as you're grabbing a Renix harness.

He's implying it's trashed because someone yanked the shifter and left the inside of the case exposed to the elements. Although, if it had a good amount of oil in it yet, it may have survived and just needs to be cleaned out.

Awesome. I think you need your own section of The Pub by now, Jim.

This is a 2.5. Only 10 head bolts. :D I don't know of a wet head bolt on the 2.5, but it does run coolant through the intake manifold. Maybe one of those hoses is leaking?

How Do Get More Flex Out Of My Rear Springs??
Geonovast replied to CoryMJ89's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
He means things like the Teraflex Revolver shackles http://www.bc4x4.com/pv/yj/revolvers/ -
It certainly wouldn't hurt to grab the master/slave, but I didn't mention those because that can be bought new. I would see if you can get the whole thing for cheap though, as there's a good chance the trans is shot. Also grab that crossmember, AX-15 ones are getting harder and harder to find.

You don't need the whole thing for the external slave stuff. Go back and grab the bellhousing, clutch fork, and bearing retainer.
-
I believe it's supposed to range from 0 - 88 ohms.

1990 2.5L Starter Removal?
Geonovast replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
IIRC the 2.5 starter has two stupid-special torx bolts that both thread upward into the block. Last time I pulled one, the exhaust wasn't a problem. Only have 12 pt sockets was. -
What's the AX-5 off of? If at all possible, go for an external slave swap when you're at it.
-
2.5 + 4 speed = 3.55 2.5 + 5 speed = 4.10

I think you'll be happier getting 4.5 inch springs and going back to stock shackles.
-
...How much bigger than stock are the shackles?

Auto To Manual Swap.help!?
Geonovast replied to coon.hunter_21's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You cannot use the 2wd AX-15. You need a 4wd one. What input shaft are you talking about? You'll need a 23 spline input shaft for the T-case. That's nothing you can take off of your AW-4... All 4.0 clutches are the same. Just make sure you get your flywheel for an 87-90. If you get a 96 flywheel, IT WILL NOT RUN. -

Your options for an automatic are going to be the AW-4, as I said, not easy to find the 2.5 versions of it. You may be able to run a 4.0 version however, with the 2.5's bell and converter. The only other automatic used in the XJ/MJ was the A904, used 84-86. You might be able to used one of those. It would be easier to know what you're starting with... should be a 2wd AW-4, but can't know for sure without seeing it.

I have a few friends who outright refuse to learn how to drive a stick. It's proving quite impossible to teach them that you don't have to like it, you don't even have to be good at it, but everyone should be able to. You never know when you might have to.

A couple things wrong with your plan B, unfortunately. The NP207 was never available behind the BA 10/5. If it's the original T-case from the trans, it'll be an NP231. Even if rebuilt, the Pukey is pretty much a turd, as well as the 207. I ran a 207for a little while, and it was quickly replaced with a 231. Even if it was a decent trans, the BA 10/5 will not bolt up to your 2.5 That was a 4.0 trans only, and I know of no bellhousing that would allow you to do that. So basically everything there is useless to you without a 4.0. AX-5s are fairly easy to come by, if you decided to swap in a stick, that's your best directly bolt-in trans. And it's AX-5, not AX-15.
-
Also, I believe your rear axle gearing is going to be 4.56. It's not going to be fun finding a front to match that.
-
Factory automatic behind the 2.5 in 87 should be an AW-4. Not a whole lot of 2.5 autos out there, so finding a 4wd 2.5 AW-4 may not be the easiest thing. However, the AW-4 does have a separable bellhousing. You might be able to get away with using a 4.0's AW-4 with your 2.5 bellhousing, but I seem to remember the internals of the 2.5 and 4.0 versions being different. Not 100% though. Personally, I'd toss in a 4wd AX-5 and tell her to get good at it... Can you get a pic of the trans so I can at least confirm you have an AW-4?

I had an 88 XJ that had that stupid plastic heater control valve crack on me. Didn't gush coolant, but it was a problem. I just cut it out, spliced the hoses, and plugged the vacuum line. Could that be it?
