I'm not saying it's not possible. Anything can be from the factory, the original buyer just has to request it.

trans/tcase 2wd vs 4wd measurement
Geonovast replied to bhorocks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Those machines are expensive to buy and upkeep. They have to pay for it somehow. There's also labor and shop supplies. $100 isn't bad. -
My red truck has a 2.5 / 3.55 because it originally came with a 4 speed. They did that, because with 4.10s and a 5 speed, your final drive is about the same as 3.55 with a 4 speed. With 3.07s on stock tires you'd be turning about 2k at 65 mph. So at bigger tires it would be considerably less. Believe me, the 2.5 is a dependable little motor, but I seriously doubt it could turn 30's with 3.07. Mine has a little trouble sometime turning stock comanche tires at 70mph+ in 5th with 3.55.

About %95 of my tools are craftsman, and I'm pretty happy with them. Only broke so far were a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter, and a piped breaker bar on a seized lugnut will do that I guess. A tamper proof Torx socket, and I kinda cracked a socket. Snap-on and Mac are a lot higher quality..but considering Craftsman still rarely breaks and they all have the same frikin warranty, I don't think they're really worth the cost unless you have nothing better to do with your money. I've seen Snap-On's website, I don't care how good a tool box is, $20k is a bit much...

trans/tcase 2wd vs 4wd measurement
Geonovast replied to bhorocks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had the spare 2wd shaft shortened, balanced, painted, and it got new joints, and it came to $102. I've heard of places charging upwards of $300 for a chop and balance...so try not to get ripped off. ;) -
Different driveshaft sizes?
Geonovast replied to WahooSteeler's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Surplus parts leftover from the J-series they had to use up? I dunno... Yeah, I was suprised when the first time I looked under my red 4 cyl MJ and saw that the D/s was as big around as my J-10 with the 360... -
trans/tcase 2wd vs 4wd measurement
Geonovast replied to bhorocks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The Ax-4 and Ax-5 are literally completely identical transmissions, other than the Ax-4 is simply missing the 5th gear parts. Case is identical, so therefore a 2wd Ax-4 and Ax-5 are going to the same length, and a 4wd Ax-4 and 4wd Ax-5 are also going to be the same length. -
Converting to 4wd is actually fairly easy, as they've said. Quite a few people have done it. I just got done with mine a week ago. http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6535 Then rewarded myself by bringing home another 2wd MJ! :P

I was making Ford 7.3L intake parts today. The piece of plastic that goes from the air filter box thing to whereever it goes. I almost cried.

trans/tcase 2wd vs 4wd measurement
Geonovast replied to bhorocks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When we originally measured, we got the 4wd Ax-5 with NP207 was 11 inches longer than the 2wd tranny. That's why I had the shop chop off 11 inches from the d/s. Another bit of advice, if your current setup is an internal slave, I highly recommend converting to an external slave setup. I bought an entire clutch kit when I did mine, since I was having the tranny out anyway, and the clutch in the truck was getting tired. Clutch kit was $170 from carquest. (I actually had to order a kit for a 2.8, since the 2.5 kit was waaaaay wrong.) And I got a brand new slave for $47 from a local parts store. It's worth it, if you ever have slave problems or a leaky line, the trans won't have to come out. -
I put a full cluster in my 91 4cyl from a 92 XJ with the 4.0 and my Tach works perfectly, didn't have to adjust anything.

How much does a 4.0 weigh?

I'll stick a fish scale on the cherry picker next time I pick one up. -
2008 DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Meet and Greet??

Ya know, if you save your pennies, we could take my red one...it doesn't get all that bad gas mileage ;) I'd like to hit up one of them things too. -
I haven't seen very many Woody's, but the driveline is pretty common for an 86.

How much does a 4.0 weigh?

Is "fully loaded" including pulleys, manifolds, and flywheel? An automatic one would weigh a little less. -
86 Full Cluster Questions
Geonovast replied to joshmillslane's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just tell the parts store that you need the temp sending unit for the 86 2.8 GAUGE, and the Oil pressure sending unit for the GAUGE. They should be able to look it up for you. I know the sensors for the 2.5 and 4.0 are the same, the senders on my red 91 MJ 2.5 are from an 88 XJ 4.0 -
Yes you can do it, from what I understand it's relatively easy. I know several people on here have done it. I probably would have done it by now, but I prefer the older style.

It is pretty quick, although I couldn't go too fast when I brought it home, for two reasons. 1. It does have a bad ball joint, so it wobbles a bit sometimes when you hit 55-65, and 2. I really don't wanna get pulled over in a vehicle that isn't legally mine yet. lol

Other specs..hmm. Well, it's a Pioneer. split rear, as you can see. Class 3 hitch attached to the bumper, some kind of aftermarket speakers, which I like. From what I'm told, it got a New Clutch, clutch master and slave several months ago. No muffler, straight pipe back from the cat. Heater's so good you could cook a turkey. AC...wee. I need a full gauge cluster for it though...anyone got one?

Picked up another MJ on Monday, after finishing up my 4x4 swap in the red truck. 91 4.0 HO 4x2, 5 speed. $650.
-
Right now. These two are crappy due to $#!&ty cell phone camera/darkness/fog, but I'll try to steal my mom's digital camera sometime tomorrow and get many better ones. I'll want about 80,000 pics for when I do the motor swap anyway. Plus I'll have my Dad's 91 4.0HO XJ for reference :brows: I suppose the results of this weekend call for a signature update!

Cherokee steering wheel on my Comache?

Yup. -
Well...it's DONE. FINALLY. Jeepco came out and we were able to get the tranny swap done in two days. Several notes for anyone who does something like this. 1. You CAN convert an Ax-4 into an Ax-5, I was told it couldn't be done, but I did it, and the transmission works beautifully. 2. Make sure your original tranny and the one going in use the same style of speed sender, or you have both. We didn't figure out that the 91 trans that came out had the larger style, and the 86 trans that went in had a smaller one. Unfortunatly I didn't have the original one for the 86, cause my dad doesn't know how to scrap vehicles. 3. If you're doing a manual, make sure you check the clutch lines/master/slave cylinders. My truck originally had an internal slave with a plastic line going from the master to the slave, with no fittings. We figured that out when we went to meet it up with my new external slave. Thankfully I'd saved the Master and line from my 88/Puky, so we were able to make that work.
