  1. No, they won't hurt anything...but they're not completely useless. When you're running, your oil pressure and temp gauges will be buried (can't remember if it's zero or max). If the 'light' comes on, the gauge will fly all the way to the other side.
  2. The suspension looks mostly stock at least.... it's just sitting on freakin small tires. But UGH.
  3. There should be a threaded fitting on the slave for the line. The problem you will run into, however, is that your current internal goes into a hole on the top of the bellhousing, whereas the external AX-15 slave is on the bottomish passenger side, so you'll need to get a longer hardline. Since yours is an 89, there should be a hardline coming off the master, then a softline, then a hardline to the slave.
  4. Has that bed been chopped down? You said 2.8, so it's an 86, which means it had to be a longbed...but yours looks shorter than a shortbed.
  5. That's correct, but the way the guy wrote it is, it's an AX, Five speed transmission. If you look at the bellhousing, it's an AX-15. He really should have specified what motor it was behind though. I would call and double check it was behind a 4.0, they look so damn similar in the later years and the pic isn't the best.
  6. Spare parts. The 8.25 will be going in my blue one, and the only two reasons I'll upgrade the rear in the 2.5; 1. That little 4 popper manages to break it on 205/75s 2. I find a 44 for the blue one. Boat anchor idea is nice though...

Kinda hit my head getting in it the first time cause the seats are so much higher...
  11. Yes there is a difference. I have working ECUs for 88 4.0/4x4/5 speed and 87 4.0/4x4/5 speed. If you need one lemme know. Oh, and the throttle bodies for autos and sticks are different as well. I believe the auto ones have a second TPS.

So I'm at my dad's helping him dig out my stroker 4.0 donor, and I notice he had different size tires on the front and back(he threw some he had laying around on the front to get rid of the DW temporarily) And I mention to him to absolutely under no conditions is he to put it in 4wd. He says ok, then he mentions he's been having a clunk by the left front tire, so I crawl under to take a look. Bearing feels ok, ball joints are fine, wheel u joint is fine, tie rods are fine, then I wiggle the front DS to check the joints...and it turns. I look over and see the disco housing. He had replaced one bearing at one point and of course ordered the part for a 91. He now tells me that they looked different when he changed it but he put it on anyway. Soooo basically, was the disco axle ever used on a 91? It was suggested to me that it was a late production 90 tagged as a 91 but it's an HO... Also, is having those two seperate style bearings going to be a problem? 91 XJ 4.0 HO/Ax-15/231

  14. I'm using 4.0 88 sensors on a 4.0 92 cluster in a 2.5 91. Shouldn't be a problem with year.
  15. Don't get too quick on the American transmission thing. The Aisin AX-15, which replaced the BA 10/5 in 89 is a Japanese transmission. Awesome tranny, but still not made by Americans.
  16. It probably wasn't replaced with the clutch. Your slave cylinder and throwout bearing are one piece(internal slave), and they usually go about $100 new, so whoever did the clutch probably didn't bother. And because it's an internal slave, that means the trans has to come out to change it.
  17. Is the motor running when you do that? If it is, I'd bet the throwout bearing is grinding. Otherwise you could be pumping air, so ditto on checking the fluid level, and you may try bleeding it.
  18. Clutch may be newer...but how's the slave cylinder/throwout bearing? Sounds like it's not fully disengaging.
  19. I'm thinking it might be worth it to try to put the stuff from the 88 only my current axle...if for nothing more than the experience. I've never had one apart before and if I blow everything up I can swap the axle then. It's not like the truck needs to be moved immediatly anyway. I'll pull the 88 and 92 ones apart this weekend, see how everything works, and go from there. Just one big question...is there supposed to be play in the rear bearings?

  21. Ok, here's the situation... D35 on my red truck has fried its brakes. Took a gear puller and a hammer to get the drum on the right side off. Pads were destroyed. I haven't pulled the left side apart yet, but I imagine it can't be too much better over there. The bearing on the right side has some play in it as well. I have an 88 XJ 35 with the bigger drums and a 92 XJ 35 with the smaller drums(same as my MJ). What's my best bet for a temporary fix? Should only have to last a few weeks until I get a different 35 for it. (86 non c-clip bigger brakes from the 3800)

  23. They should be the same. The 2.5s are anyway. I had no exhaust clearence problems when I converted my 2.5.
  24. Can you elaborate on this? Any write-ups on adjusting the tach? I just did this to my 4-cylinder, but a cluster from a 4-cyl was impossible to find, so i settled for a 6-cyl, but obviously the tach is off. thx.. Cluster in my 4 cyl is from a 6 cyl and the tach seems to be dead on.
