The fluid does get old over time. Decided on a 4wd conversion eh? Good plan. It's really very simple.

There are some places in the US that give out the disable window hangers if you have difficulty operating a cell phone. Yet my neighbor, who has an inoperable foot, can't read, has a plate in her head, and is likely to die from Lupis in the next 20 years, has been fighting for a disability settlement for nearly 23 years. Sometimes, I really hate this country.

Nope. From what I understand, Dakota beds are actually one of the more difficult beds to modify to get on. Also, the taillights appear to be the same, but they're completely different.
-
Yes it does, but I don't think the kid can reach the ground.

I think what ticks me off more than people parking in those spots is the bastards who are driving a car with disabled plates, who obviously aren't disabled. I must admit, though, it has been nice being able to park in the Pregnant Mothers spots when we're out and about.

xj -> mj; Two different front driveshafts!?!
Geonovast replied to CRF136N's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You can post up a WTB thread with your location in the classifieds, may get you better luck. I personally have 3 of the exact shaft you need. And just an FYI, the AX-15 and BA 10/5 are the same length, so used the same shaft. -
It's called either one, but it's the same thing. Crank Case Ventilation Positive Crankcase Ventilation

bought another, need front lift advice
Geonovast replied to dunl's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It makes the front angle worse, and the wheel base of the MJ is long enough to not need that kind of correction unless you're going stupid high. -
xj -> mj; Two different front driveshafts!?!
Geonovast replied to CRF136N's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The AW4 is about an inch longer than the BA 10/5, so the driveshaft would be a bit longer. It's got nothing to do with XJ/MJ. 4cylinder shafts are also shorter, with differences between auto and manual. There's at least 4 different stock front shafts, along with the old CV shafts used up until 87. -
Whoever told you that either doesn't know what they're talking about, or is somehow trying to get money out of you. The EGR is just a pipe that runs from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold, and is controlled by the valve to allow a small amount of exhaust into the intake. The EGR was completely done away with in 91. Your pcv valves may be crudded up and stuck, which will cause oil to blow by into the air filter. Very common on both the 2.5 and 4.0. The valves are located inside the valve cover, underneath the two big hoses going to it.
-
EGR has nothing to do with oil. The EGR allows exhaust into the intake. Are you talking the PCV system on the top of the valve cover? If you are, then yes. Cherokees and Comanches are pretty much identical from the doors forward. Everything in the engine bay is identical. Front suspension is identical with the exception that the LCA frame mounts on the MJ are a little beefier. So basically, anything on the motor is going to be interchangeable with any 87-90 4.0 XJ/MJ.

Where are you located? Might help us find you a transmission.

I agree that you should have gotten a ticket. If they go lenient on little amounts, it'll eventually spin out of control. But $85 is friggin ridiculous. I think $10 or $15 would be reasonable.

If you're worried about problems, I'd start by checking all fluids. Look at the vacuum and coolant lines for cracks. Another good idea is to take a breaker bar and socket, and turn the motor manually with the nut on the balancer. Make sure it's in neutral. :smart: Other than that, there's not much else you can do before you crank the motor. If anything internal is gonna break, it's gonna break regardless. And if you do happen to break that cruddy little 2.8, there are several upgrade options available. It's a little odd to me that it's a 4 speed. All 2.8s I've seen either had the 3 speed (TF904) auto or 5 speed (AX-5) manual. I've only seen the 4 speed (AX-4) behind the 2.5L.

87-90 4 4cylinder XJ/MJ. I think you should be able to pull all the accessories and bolt all the serpentine belt stuff on.

Personally, I wouldn't put any money into fixing the BA 10/5 and spring for an external slave AX-15 swap. If you go that route, there's a nice thread on it here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17293 so I don't have to type it all again. As for your problem, I would blame the slave cylinder not pushing forward far enough. If you can't find any leaks, you can try bleeding it to see if you managed to trap some air in the line. If you need to replace the slave cylinder, I would strongly recommend the AX-15 swap. You already need to pull the trans anyway. An external setup is much better to diagnose and repair, and the AX-15 is much stronger transmission. Finding a 2wd AX-15 shouldn't be hard. AX-15s can be found in mid89-99 XJs, mid89-92 MJs, and mid89-95 YJs, and some TJs. Don't remember the exact years for TJs. All with 4.0L 5 speeds. Don't confuse it with the AX-5, which was behind the 2.5 4cylinder and 2.8 V6. Oh, and welcome to the club!

The smoke would be from an exhaust leak, but that's not the cause. That hole is just part of the heatshield, and there's supposed to be a hose that runs from that to the intake box, to help heat the air as it comes in. Supposedly heated air improves mileage.
-
:needpics: If you could snap a few pictures that would definitely help describe what you've got. I bet a chunk of exhaust manifold missing is a big part of your problem.
-
Ugh. I think more CL 4.0s are V6s than I6s. I emailed him asking for engine bay pictures.

:hmm: :dunno: They can push a lot of air, and are super quiet. They also have that nasty habit of lasting a long time. From what I understand they generally run ~twice as much as a comparable piston compressor. I'd have one if I had money.

Problem with pnp parts is you really don't know the condition until you get it home. For all you know, some yuppie took that truck to the yard because the T-case broke. If you can rebuild your case completely for $150, I'd say that's not that bad. Then you know everything's good and you don't have to worry about it breaking as much, especially if you're out on the trail. Sorry, gotta side with your dad on this one.

NP231 confusion? Help please!
Geonovast replied to SkipshotMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There are the Teralow 4:1 kits, but from what I understand they're rather expensive. A stock NP231 Lo-range ratio is 2.72:1. Unless you do a lot of offroading with huge tires or very steep hills, your money is better spent in finding axles a step lower. -
NP231 confusion? Help please!
Geonovast replied to SkipshotMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Towing shouldn't have been any more wear and tear than driving that same distance. There was probably a problem before, and moving that distance just made it much worse. -
Throwing in a stick isn't an option?
