thejum57 Posted May 11 Posted May 11 My 86 Comanche has been sittiing 5 or so years and it's time to resurrect it. My gas cap won't come off, it's like it's welded to the body. It has the original plastic cap. I tried to remove the little nuts around it but can only really get to one. Any suggestions would be appriciated. Unfortunately it has almost 3/4 of a tank of gas ... that should be complete garbage now. Got it off ! Pried the black part off which broke some of the inner part and tapped the nubs with a big screwdriver untill the threads loosened. Sprayed a bunch of silicone on it and screwed the brokken piece part way in just to keep it sealed untill I get a new cap. Thanks for all the suggestions! Found a new replacement on Parts Geek for $7.21 !! https://www.partsgeek.com/pnkcjdk-jeep-comanche-fuel-tank-cap.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=ff&utm_content=UK&utm_campaign=PartsGeek+Google+Base&utm_term=1986-1992+Jeep+Comanche+Fuel+Tank+Cap+Motorad+86-92+Jeep+Fuel+Tank+Cap+88+89&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=17182816450&gbraid=0AAAAAD_bfN7_cs-QYb9GAJhA_wdPEgpOF&gclid=CjwKCAjwn4vQBhBsEiwAq3hhN2xbWSDOwmdpoQeHcYPeC8dwMTJ0pUckgpmzgA31oLHRz9XnEx35ARoC43wQAvD_BwE
JZLAJeep Posted May 11 Posted May 11 Break the cap off and get a new one? And that gas is certainly bad. Our Comanche had been sitting for at least 5 years when we got it and the gas was orange and smelled quite bad. I still remember how quickly my oldest son moved when seeking relief from the mouthful he got when siphoning.
thejum57 Posted May 11 Author Posted May 11 What would be the easiest way to break it off ? I'm afraid if I tried to pry it off it might mess up the threads on the tank spout. I guess being plastic the cap should break before hurting the threads.
Boilermaker Posted May 11 Posted May 11 Pry it with a screwdriver https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/fuel-cap-stuck-my-91-cherokee-148867/ Pressure may have built up inside the tank and up the fuel filler neck pressing on the cap. If you can remove a hose to the tank or the filler neck to relieve the pressure, that may help loosen the cap.

fiatslug87 Posted May 12 Posted May 12 Put some flat bar against the handle in the loosen direction and give it a whack with a small sledge to break it free.

Here's what I mean:

I mean, that cap is going to be trash as is and needs to be replaced anyway so breaking it apart would always be an option. I'm lazy and have a lot of tools

Officialstorm_chaser Posted May 12 Posted May 12 Just now, Officialstorm_chaser said: maybe not.. then again, how are you supposed to hit it without doing 1 of two things: 1, scratching it, even though it is patially rusted, it still has a nice paint. 2, denting the truck, what if you miss the flat piece and hit the truck?

watchamakalit Posted May 12 Posted May 12 Hit it the same but from the bottom up. I'd choose oil tip her pliers as suggested. Slow work goes wrong at a much slower pace. Better to break the cap with pliers than smash it and half the truck with a hammer.
fiatslug87 Posted May 12 Posted May 12 How hard is it to hit the flat bar? Haven’t you ever driven a nail? Put a rag between it and the body if you’re worried about the bar touching.
