I’m close on the Carter carb, it’s running rich to where it’s not passing. derf Posted November 9, 2025 Posted November 9, 2025 If you're going to do a carb swap, I have a Motorcraft 2150 that I just took off my CJ. And the adapter to bolt it to a 2bbl manifold. The 2150 is a good all around carburetor. It probably needs a rebuild and maybe some different jets. It was running rich on my CJ. Another alternative would be a TBI from a 4.3 chebby. Easy swap if you're good with wiring.

I went this route in my cj. As much as I enjoyed the simplicity of carbs, the tbi is nice. much better cold starts and a really easy setup to work with.
Eagle_SX4 Posted November 9, 2025 Posted November 9, 2025 For now I suggest keeping it carbureted. I have read some about the Weber swap and it seems like a good option if you have the correct model. You can still buy all the parts for the Carter BBD. I ran one on my 4.0 for about 2 years before I put the multi port injection on. Also if you have the version with the computer controlled stepper motor on it, that adds to the tunning issues. If you keep the BBD I would suggest bypassing the computer using the "nutter bypass" method. Then finding a non stepper motor BBD. Those are much easier to tune. I highly suggest getting a wideband O2 sensor to help with tunning. For me it was nearly impossible to tell if the changes I made helped or hurt the tune.

I’ve contemplated the bypass, however I wasn’t sure I could do it since I can barely find any info on what you can and can’t do in AZ related to carbs and stuff. But since I can do a carb swap, a nutter bypass can be done along with the HEI stuff. Though the duraspark is running pretty good to my surprise. It does have that sole-vac or idle stop as it was called on other AMCs but I adjusted that screw so the idle stop isn’t doing much.

That would be the most time efficient way to pass emissions. i will have to do that. Looks like the PO's got a new O2 installed rather recently. Also the Weber I have is a 32/36 which is supposed to fit. Might be a good candidate.
