Trans upgrade questions

Recommended Posts

My 88 has the DREADED Peugeot 5spd in it.

I know it is only a matter of time with 180k on the odometer before this thing goes to hell on me.

What is the trans that I should replace it with?

No slush drive... It has to be a manual! Preferably 5spd but I could deal with 4.

I would like to have it on hand before this one goes bad being it is my DD.

AX-15 ('89.5-'99) or NV3550 ('00+) from a later Jeep with the 4.0L. You'll need to get a matching t-case with the later transmissions' 23 spline output though (peugeot is 21 spline). External slave is always a plus (95+).

X2 ...

The AX-15 would be the easiest solution.

There's also the T5, but unless it's had the World Class upgrade I wouldn't bother. My '83 J10 came with one, but it had been run low on oil so the synchro for at least 1 gear has welded itself to the main shaft.

They come 23 or 21 spline (mine is 23)

The BA 10/5 is not a terrible tranny as everyone makes it out to be...mine lasted 200K hard miles b4 the syncro for 1st and 2nd crapped out...it was due to a leak that i never fixed...i had mine rebuilt just b/c i didnt have the the time or money to locate and install another trans, i run synthetic fluid in mine and it shifts great with no problems anymore...but if your dead set on a swap i would also reccomend the AX15...much cheaper to rebuild and has the external slave

Why?

Do you routinely run it without oil? Do you periodically fill it with steel shavings? Do you use it for target practice with a .50 BMG sniper rifle?

My '88 XJ has the "dreaded" Peugeot tranny. I'm at 270,000 miles and (knock on wood) it's still doin' its thing. I'd say unless you make it a point to abuse your equipment you should be good for at least another 100,000 miles or so.

My '87 with a BA10/5 has 300K miles on it. No real issues other than a bit notchy on the 1/2 upshift.

I wasn't going to change it out right away, I just wanted to know what I should have on the shelf for when the time comes :D

I really don't have any troubles right now especially since I just replaced the entire clutch system except for the flywheel. i did Master cyl ,hose, internal slave, disk and pressure plate. I am noticing some effort is needed to go from 1st to 2nd and in OD there somtimes is a strange growl.

I have had them come apart on me before with way less than 180K so I figured better safe than sorry!

As long as you are keeping the fluid changed I bet you can get a lot more life out of it. Mine went from feeling like it was gonna die to shifting like new after I changed out the fluid. The old stuff was the color and consistancy of chocolate milk.

Also please shrink down the pic in your sig, you are breaking tables.

You could also consider swapping for an AW4. I did when my BA10/5 came unglued. Its a little bit of work and maybe not as much fun to drive, but its a strong replacement.

BTW I still have not come by any good tail lenses.
