Eagle
When not hanging out here, I sometimes lurk on a forum for authors. A young woman on that site recently contacted me because she somehow thought I know something about welding. Since I can't recall ever mentioning welding on that site, I think she has me confused with someone else. But, I would like to help her with the question. She asked if there is an industry name or term for a bumpy weld, like this: Does a weld like that have a name? TIA
jdog
It's been a while since I have welded but those look like stitch welds to me
Salvagedcircuit
I think @jdog is right. It's a technique where you place tack welds spaciously over the cutout region between the patch and the larger metal. You eventually fill the interface between the two materials, but you keep adding tack welds as far apart as possible in effort to even out the heat generated, prevent warping and lower the chances of punching through. This method is usually done on thin metals. It is tricky to get right.

neohic
Everything checks out in the above comments to me. Stitch welds… trigger welds… body work welding… it’s a series of tacks to control warpage by jumping around the part. This typically isn’t the type of weld that goes without sanding/finishing. pizzaman09
As a person who has a lot of this sort of welding, I've just now learned what it's called!
EUREKA
My father owned a custom metal fab shop and I was a welder for years. I call it stitch welding. It's many tack welds.
