1988 Street Truck - AWD, LS, 5 Speed, Discs

Recommended Posts

Some of my goodies arrived, also have an NP242 Shifter assembly en route.

These are pretty dirty. But will clean up nicely.

The ECU is a 2000/2001 model for compatibility with LS Tach/Oil Pressure/ECT

Looking good. So is the 2000 & 2001 ecu compatible with stock LS sensor ranges?

Not entirely, you use the Jeep Oil PSI and ECT sensors on the LS block...and the tach is a funky one. You have to convert the GM Tach output (with a tuner) range to work with Jeep ranges, then you splice the 97+ XJ Cam/Crank signal wires to the GM tach output wire and it works seamlessly without an emulator...Only the 2000/2001 ECU's do this, as the C.O.P. ECU's work a little different than distro ECU's.

Worth noting, for reference if this ever gets researched:

2000/2001 ECU's use a 3-wire ECT, if using a 1999 and down harness (Like mine) you have to run a +5V reference for the 3 Wire ECT.

The 2000/2001 ECU does not work with the earlier 2-wire ECT.

Been slow the past week.

Have friends in town, but I have been prepping the axles to go under the truck so that I can work on it in a less sketchy way.

Ordered up all new bushings, links, components for steering, suspension, brakes, sway bars, etc. Should all be here in the coming days.

Rear axle is stripped down and getting cleaned, prepped for new perches and new brakes.

Front axle is getting cleaned and prepped for new upper control arm bracket removal/modification.

Took an hour to update the list, looking like itll be over 5k at this point, hoping to be under 6k. But still not bad!

Been busy with family and friends, but managed to get a couple hours in this morning.

Rear XJ 8.25 cleaned, painted, new seals.

Got the KJ disc brakes mocked up on there just for the visual satisfaction, but gotta pull it all apart again when I weld in the new perches, which I need fresh welding gas for.

Much better to deal with than airgas.

I got a place local to me that is open 7 days a week 10 mins from my house, for fair price, I was with airgas until I found this place LOL

Thanks for the suggestion though!

In for mockup, mostly needed it there so I could have the jack stands somewhere safer while I work on and under the jeep, but looking great! Will need to come back out to weld in the perches whenever I figure out pinion angle.

In the name of going fast, being stable, and looking good. Cut the driver side mount off entirely.

This will hopefully enable lowering the truck a little bit, and help with clearance around driveshaft, and driver side exhaust clearance.

Passenger side will be chopped and lowered as much as possible.

So is this going to be a 3 link?

Yes, my crawler XJ is a 3 link and it does fine.

But with this being geared towards handling moreso than the crawler is, I may change it once I drive it and assess how I like the handling.

I am thinking if I don't like it, I can always make a "offset Y-link" utilizing the passenger side frame control arm mount, "y"ing to two spots on the axle as upper mounts. That's the idea if needed at least.

Got sidetracked buying a boat for the summer...

But managed to strip my parts XJ down to just a shell, and started cutting it up to get the MJ done.

Working on rockers currently.

Well, as youve seen in this build thread I originally bought a 4.8 to put in this MJ, but this last weekend the plans may have changed.

My daily driver was a 2012 Sierra Denali, for those of you who don't know, the Denali's came with a "truck version" of the LS3, its a 6.2 liter all aluminum gen 4 LS. They have about 415HP from the factory.

With a relatively basic cam, it is easily a 500+HP motor that weighs less than the 4.0 did.

Long story short, I was in a 3 car, and 1 boat pileup, not my fault whatsoever. The truck is almost certainly totaled, my boat survived with some minor glasswork needed. The Fiance and I came out with just bumps and bruises luckily. Three other people in the wreck also just bumps and bruises. The vehicles all did the job and kept everybody safe.

I also have a crawler XJ that is going to get an LS after this MJ build...and I think this MJ would benefit from a lighter more powerful engine rather than the crawler that is heavy and slow regardless.

So IF I can come to an agreement wit insurance, I will buy the Sierra back and part it out, keeping the engine, trans, ECU, Harness for myself. The 4.8 will then get built as a torquey motor for the Crawler XJ

The other part I am considering keeping is the front seats, not only are they nice leather plush seats, but they are 3 stage heated, and 3 stage cooled seats. By far my favorite option of any car I have ever had is cooled seats. (new daily driver must have this option as well lol)

I submitted the claim to the insurance on the truck yesterday, and will find out in the coming week or two what the details are, fingers crossed I can work a deal with insurance. This morning I went to the tow yard to get my belongings out of the truck, and had a brief moment alone so I started the truck, motor still sounds just fine and ran great.

I have a Novak emulator, never used it. Happy to ship it to you if you need one.

How are things coming along? Any updates?

I got overwhelmed with projects after the crash. So this comanche got put into storage as well with the other...

I ended up keeping my totaled Denali, and buying a parts truck to fix my original.

Did a nice Engine refresh, TSP cam, springs, retainers, gaskets etc.

New suspension, body panels, steering, interior, air bags, seatbelts ETC.

But my truck is done, for the most part now. Some small odds and ends to tidy up still.

Things with the Comanches kind of took a turn, in passing, I noticed a crack on the 5.3 that was in the Grey IFS comanche, and I had the 4.8 sitting waiting to go into the Street Comanche that will likely get a Cam and go into the IFS Comanche.

That being said, the parts truck I got to repair my Denali, also has an Aluminum 6.2, that would make a great motor for the street MJ build.

That is the plan for the time being, The 4.8 is getting worked on currently, and will likely get swung into the IFS comanche quickly so that I can get back onto the street Comanche build.

Been a whirlwind the past month getting the truck figured out. Trying to get back into the swing of things.

Going to close this chapter, a friend made me an offer on this truck that I could not refuse. He bought the truck with all the 1997+ swap parts, and intends to finish the truck out, with a small lift, 31'' ish tires and make it a nice weekend cruiser.

Shifting my focus back to my pride and joy IFS Comanche.

Thanks everyone for following along, sorry for the abrupt end to this build LOL
