Tire carrier

Recommended Posts

My MJ didn’t have a tire carrier on it when I got it.  I looked at pics of the OEM design, and fabricated a new bracket from 1” square tubing and some plate steel.

my actual tire winch is one from a late 90’s Ford Explorer.   I welded a small 1/4” drive socket onto the input shaft on the winch, and thus use a 1/4drive extension and cheap ratchet to run the winch up and down.

If you can imagine what a stock under bed tire carrier looks like, that is what mine look like. 😉

Haha, that's where my spare 31" is rn, but ima go big like 35s and it will not fit there...

I built a hitch receiver tire carrier for my XJ.   I've seen a lot of them on "overlanding" pickup trucks and it would be easy to make one for a Comanche.   It doesn't show in these pics but it also carries a 5 lb. propane cylinder and has a folding table top and burner for cooking.   I also built it so I can still tow a trailer with it installed.

I haven't tried it on my MJ ... but now I'm curious.  It would probably look better on a Comanche with a cap. :dunno:

I’m heading to the Bantam event this coming weekend and since it’s a five hour drive for me I thought better change doughnut tire for full size spare. I was going to start a page to ask if anyone else put a full size spare on the cable holder and had good luck with it or more problems than running just the doughnut.  since Zomiezter started this page I figured I’ll put it up here

I’ve always carried a full size spare in mine, it’s great insurance just in case, these are 31’s and Imo it looks awesome to me to see another 31 10.5 mt sticking out. BDA6532F-1A18-4676-8E49-AD55EDFE8934.jpeg.3f9edf3f501f9f0f664dfd14663a7957.jpeg

also pro tip if you care about how the spare wheel you carry looks, face it up so the winch end and rocks/road debris don’t mess it up, the sidewalk of the tire will hold the face off the bed.

Fabtech spare tire mount. Current replacing the original bed, so I might mess around with trying to reposition the tire mount closer to the rear wall for more bed space
