Pete M Posted February 28, 2023 Share Posted February 28, 2023 I've been giving some thought to adding more red lights to the truck I'm fixing up for a friend, but we decided to go with a high mount brake/cargo light since she wants a cargo light anyway. the tailgate strip was second in line. the more light hitting the texter behind you, the better. That and I find that a lot of the 3rd party lighting equipment is not designed for the elements. There is a lot of import rubbish. gogmorgo Posted February 28, 2023 Share Posted February 28, 2023 Aluminum bases are just asking to let water in if you live anywhere near salt. Aluminum corrodes worse than steel. Plastic and a fully potted board and hope for the best. The biggest failing then is the itty bitty wires they always use… just because 22awg can hold the current necessary doesn’t mean it’ll hold up to the mechanical stresses or survive for more than a few days if the insulation gets compromised. Potting compound is indeed some great stuff. You will never find it used in cheapo amazon / aliexpress lights though. pizzaman09 Posted March 2, 2023 Share Posted March 2, 2023 The Comanche definitely has some pretty weak taillights, just second place to the ones on my Austin Healey Sprite. I'm personally partial to the idea of the third brake light up top as that is more normal. The company that makes them stands by their products. I had an issue with a LED lense and the sent me out a new pair. pizzamam09 never thought of putting an LED bulb in there? Great idea. Pete M Posted March 3, 2023 Share Posted March 3, 2023 be very careful about putting an LED into a housing designed for a regular bulb. rear output can suffer, even if the led is itself brighter. also your turns won't blink unless you accommodate the lack of resistance. NHMJXJ Posted March 10, 2023 Share Posted March 10, 2023 Having been rear ended twice, I think a high mount brake light would be best. Probably not cheap though. As for the light strips, too low and not enough of a gap between the tailgate and the bumper to get any benefit. Lastly, I've had LED taillight/reverse bulbs in the last two MJ's (and current XJ) and have never had a problem. The reverse lights are like low hanging flood lights. Works out good in the XJ because all my factory tinted rear glass has additional 30% tint over it. Makes it limousine black. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
gogmorgo Posted March 10, 2023 Share Posted March 10, 2023 You definitely see the brake lights under the tailgate. Trouble is it’s not part of the standard lighting configuration. I’ve definitely caught myself staring at it going “WTF is that?” for longer than I care to admit before realizing what was going on. You also see them wired into just one side of the trailer stop/turn circuits, which means they just start flashing if you hit the turn signal that direction. Distracts quite a bit from the proper turn signal. Ditto with the ones that pop into a trailer hitch. Standardized lighting systems exist for a reason.
