thankrod
Found this Comanche off Marketplace and have been pondering it for a few days. Obviously I’m gunning for a 4.0L but if I could snag this for around 4.5K I think I’d settle. 2.5L on FB Marketplace Can someone with experience with a 2.5L let me know if I’m just screwing myself taking this thing off-roaring in Mojave or Big Bear? Nothing crazy, but I’m afraid of how this thing will handle an incline. I think even having this and eventually making a 4.0L swap when the engine craps out to give this thing more life would be best for its life, but easier said than done. Thoughts? rylee144
If you are going to do a 4.0 swap and wanna road trip to WA this one dropped to $800 bucks. Just a thought. The one you posted looks like a good truck https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/177236970867532/?ref=facebook_story_share
89 MJ
That truck is not a short bed. 86s were long bed only. It is very difficult to put a 4.0 in an 86. @eaglescout526 is the 2.5 guy.
Pete M
that seems like a poor candidate for a gut-everything-and-start-over type of project.

That one has more miles on it than I’ve been looking for. I think the relatively low mileage on the OP is one of my biggest draws to it. This would be my first MJ, so 4.0 swap was really just a pipe dream and not a mandatory. @eaglescout526 and @Pete M– wondering about my concern on the incline? Knowing this is a long bed that already limits the off-road ability of it, but after a short life it’s still something I would love to do with it. I’m also moving to Denver soon, so the idea would be dropping my Civic for this and turning the Comanche into a daily. I appreciate your advice! eaglescout526
2.5L is a stout engine. If youre gonna do some crawling with it, gearing and upgrading to the AX15 with a Dakota bellhouse that has the same engine will make it a bolt in upgrade, plus external bell house(if you do this upgrade let me know please! I can't for the life of me find an 84-86 AX4or 5 trans) Also a good thing I read when AMC made the engine was to phase out GM's crap 4cyl for theirs and they made the 2.5L with the Jeeps and Eagle in mind so they made it for the off road scene. So it will do any basic off road you want it to do. If you want to take it even further, you can upgrade to Chryslers MPFI platform for the engine and get a bit more HP and torque out of it. Hell why not put in an electric fan to reduce drag on the engine from the mechanical fan.
eaglescout526
I also drove my 2.5L which has an AX5 with 4.10 out back on 215r15 75 tires up hell of an incline on the free way from Phoenix to Payson and granted it was a bit of a dog in third(didnt want to push her too much at the time) but with the 2.5L's low end torque, you shouldnt have any problem at all. Plus youll still have more gas than most guys with a 4.0L.
