So I'm planning some modifications for my project Jeep.

I'm looking at using one of the factory switch holes for a custom function.  Short version is I want a toggle switch that will let me force first or second gear when I shift down to 1-2, or to leave it in "factory mode" where it shifts itself.  I have the wiring figured out with a couple of relays.  I just need a switch.  An aftermarket switch will work but if I can find one that looks factory, it would be cooler.

The switch needs to be a single pole double throw switch with on-off-on positions.  It would work similarly to the XJ rear wiper/washer switch except that the wash position on the XJ switch is a momentary switch (i.e. it goes back to off when you take your finger off it).  What I want is to be able to set the switch up, down, or middle and it stays there until I switch it again.

Was there ever an application that used an on-off-on switch that wasn't a momentary switch?  If so, where would I find one?

I have never seen a factory one.  What is your goal?  To be able to lock/hold it into just 1st gear, or to also lock/hold it into 2nd gear as well?  I can say that I use one of those small Radesigns shifters on my XJ, and love the ability to lock it into any gear when rock crawling.  I used an aftermarket version of an On-Off-On switch for the same reason.

Yeah, my goal is to have 3 choices:

1.  Factory normal operation (off)

2.  Force first gear (on 1)

3.  Force second gear (on 2)

And I want to do it so that if the computer wants 3rd or 4th, the switches are bypassed.  I have the wiring and relays figured out.  I have an aftermarket switch that would work.  I would prefer a factory style switch if one exists.

I *may* be able to modify a factory switch for you. Working on your switch trim cover already but let me see about the switch.

That would be awesome if you can do it.

Is it easier to modify a momentary On-Off-momentary On switch? The rear power window switch from a Grand Wagoneer is this type and looks pretty close to the others. The one on the right in the clock panel.

I've never taken one of the factory switches apart.  I don't know how easy it would be to modify them.  I have a few switches to play with.  I might try taking them apart to see.

That’s an interesting one. Any pic of the back side of that switch?

Plan B showed up today.

I found some switches that will do what I want and fit in the factory holes.

If you go to the Cole Hersee website, they have lots of options for those switches.  The 58327 series has lights.  The -01 is the single pole, single throw version.  The -06 is the single pole, double throw.  They make them without lights in them, as well as having double pole and momentary switches as well so you can find what you want.  They're available on Amazon once you find the part number.

I don't think you need a three position switch. If the TCU loses power, the tranny defaults to starting in first and skipping second (IIRC -- check the FSM for AW4 diagnostics). So I think all your switch has to do is interrupt power to one side of the 1-2 solenoid.

I just don’t understand the need to force 2nd. :dunno:

I want it to shift up from 1st to 2nd earlier than the computer does but I don't want it to go all the way to 3rd on it's own.  :dunno:

Makes sense I just can’t picture the scenario at the moment. Either way, your custom switch panel is almost finished!

Sometimes the trail is smooth-ish and I want to run in second without shifting up or down.  It's annoying when the computer down shifts on you and leaving it in 3rd means it will up shift when you don't want it to.

Had to redirect this topic. Is that grand wagoneer switch momentary on in both directions like a regular power window switch?
