NV 3550, Peugeot BA 10-5, NSG370

Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. Really I would recommend you find a 94+ AX-15. Have you tried car-part.com? Or search Craiglist in your area. When I was looking for mine I found several near me, and I live in the middle of no-where Missouri. They really aren't that bad to find yet. You can even buy "new" ones online.

* NV3550 out of an early 2000's TJ.  Pretty much on par with the AX15.

* NSG370 out of a 2005-06 TJ.  It's a "good enough" transmission with one extra gear over the AX15.  I'd still prefer the AX15 or NV3550 as they are stronger and easier to find parts for.  Don't get one from a 2007+ JK.  It has a different bellhousing that's not compatible with the 4.0 and it's part of the transmission so you can't adapt it.

* Peugeot BA 10/5 out of an 87-89 XJ/MJ/YJ.  I would avoid this transmission.  Some people have had good luck with it but it's really a light duty transmission.

* Borg Warner T5 out of an 80's CJ7/CJ8.  It works fine and bolts to the 4.0 but it's a lighter duty transmission than the AX15.  It's not as bad as the Peugeot but it's not the strongest.

The only other alternatives are to adapt something else from another truck.  There are lots of options to find adapter bellhousings that let you bolt up transmissions from full size trucks.  But then you also have to deal with the transfer case which may or may not be easy.  And then you have driveshafts to deal with as well.

Best bet is to be patient and search harder for an AX15.  They do pop up from time to time.  If you're willing to pay shipping, you can find one somewhere in the country.

NV3550 is getting harder to find parts to rebuild. It wasn't used as long. Originally, it was touted as better than the AX-15, but I don't think that has panned out. AX-15 is available, just use some patience. And, while the external cylinder AX-15 is what you want, the e,eternal slave Bell housing is a simple bolt on conversion, if you can only find the early model. It does add about another $150, if you have to go that way.

I second the suggestion of car-part.com I was having trouble finding an 8.25 axle with stock 4.10 gears, seems 4 cylinder Liberty's are somewhat rare. I found one an hour and a half away.

I was at a JY last year. There were 2 XJs with AX15s.  One was had 4WD and an internal slave cylinder; the other was 2wd with an external slave cylinder.

I left the yard with a 4wd AX15 and the bell housing for an external slave cylinder. It took some time and work.

Be patient and search around.

There are tons of them on eBay. Also car-part.com. Here are new ones from Novak: https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/transmission/transmission-packages/ax15-package/

Rock auto carries them also. You’ll just have to look outside of you immediate area. Shipping an ax15 is simple and cheap.
