Mac7
Thought that I'd properly introduce myself, I'm Mac. I just purchased a 86 4.0, 4x4, long bed, with a 4 speed. My plans will be to make into a daily driver, which means I'll be swapping the transmission out with something that has an overdrive. The below pic is of her on the way home. This will be a slow moving build as life is really busy at the moment. I'll be digging and looking around for info, thanks in advance!

BeaterComanche86
Welcome be sure to add your vin to registry to get the details of how your mj came from the factory. I’m pretty sure the 86’s didn’t come factory with the 4.0 so was it swapped in? Tons of great info and people here, read all you can.
Pete M
welcome to the addiction! are you sure it's a 4.0? all 4.0 transmissions come with overdrive.
Mac7
Its an inline 6 that the previous owner swapped in, he also put in a different 4 speed. I'll take pictures of it once I'm home. I have an AX-15 that I'm going to swap it with.

That valve cover would fit a 4.2 head up to ‘86 based on the bolt hole configuration. 4.2 intake manifold also. Older CJ alternator mount on top... V-belts... yup, it’s a 4.2. eaglescout526
I guess swapping in a 4.2L is an option but you might as well just leave the 4.0L and drop in 4.2L guts to make a stroker. I just saw its an 86, the fact the PO dropped in the 4.2L is pretty good. Probably was literally plug and play with the 2.8L harness and set up
