If MJs didn't exist

Back in the 80's, I was a parts driver for a Toyota dealership.  I had to run parts to repair/body shops and pick up parts from other dealerships.  I drove a little, state-bed pickup all around MD-DC-VA.  That was when I fell in love with little pickups.

When I graduated college, my girlfriend (now wife) bought the MJ new.  She drove it for approx. three years until we bought a 91 XJ.  Then that became her DD.  I drove the MJ as my DD. I fell in love with the MJ/small pickups again.

If there was no MJ, I would have probably bought a Ranger, Explorer Sportrac, or one of the smaller Toyota/Nissan pickups.  I am not a fan of the "full-size" pickups.

Easy.

1st gen Colorado (I have owned 2 S10s and an Astro and they suck but the Colorado is actually pretty decent)

OR Round body 1500 with the LS or 95-99 square body 1500.

Although I second 87MJTIM... Full size isn't really my thing. Recently picked up an 08 Silverado for super cheap, had it for 4 days before I turned around and sold it. Thought about keeping it over my minivan but the minivan beat it out.

Whatever it would be, not a damn full size truck! And definitely not a lifted one!

Yesterday, mostly to get out of the house, I agreed to help a friend work on his '91 Chevy 1500 4x4 in exchange for his help running some errands. It's the same age as my MJ with about 75,000 more miles. I believe it has a 2" lift on it, but that's enough to make almost everything on it a pain in the @$$. To get to much of anything in that engine bay comfortably, you've got to climb up on the bumper and sit on the fender. Lifting something over the side of the bed? Forget about it. It's got the 4.3L V6 with a 5-speed transmission, so pretty much the most basic 4x4 fullsize you could buy from GM at the time. You'd think for how much space there is in that engine bay, it would be a little easier to work on. Nope - somehow, even with all the space in the world to work with, they still managed to make a simple power steering hose a huge pain in the @$$ to reach. The equivalent hose in an MJ (with an engine bay that's half the size but still has a lot more stuff in it) is no big deal to replace as long as the fitting doesn't seize up. And don't even get me started on the terrible plastic interior that's completely falling apart in every way imaginable. I didn't even know a dashboard could fall apart in so many ways. Hey, at least the floors aren't rusted in it.

Working on everyone else's crap makes me forget how good I have it working on Jeeps. Especially GM - things that should be simple always end up being a PITA on every GM vehicle I've ever worked on. And that's quite a few at this point.

I was looking for a cheap truck (anything but a Chevy) when I found my MJ, specifically I was leaning towards older Ford pickups as I was always a Ford truck guy. I still love the older 96 and older Ford trucks. But my Comanche fell in my lap at just the right time, and Ill never get rid of it.

What would be your go to vehicle if the Jeep MJ/XJ platform was never created?

My choice would be the 1973-1987(1991) Chevy and GMC squarebody pickups.

PS, can you all tell that online school isn't very exciting? I only come on here once I am done with my classwork.

i would of got a tj. or a pig nose j3000

I guess that I may be one of the few here that would have chosen a full size pickup. I still like the jeep platform but I've also only ever really had full size pickups. Heck my current dd is an 06 f350 dually. I do have to agree tho that it's nice to be able to reach everything under the hood without a step ladder.
