Another gear ratio / tire size thread

Recommended Posts

Well it was inevitable I suppose. For my daily driver, 31" tires, automatic trans. No rock crawling, decent amount of mud and sand though.

It will see plenty of freeway at 70 mph.

Now I know I don't NEED to change the current 3.55:1 ratio but . . .

both pinion seals are leaking, I'm installing truetracks, I'm not afraid of spending $$$ in pursuit of building my version of the perfect MJ.

IF the chart on this website is accurate then I feel I would theoretically want about 3.91 - 4.11 gears.

http://www.alloyusa.com/gear-ratio-calculator/

So is the chart linked above accurate? If cost was not an object, what would you do?

I wouldn't waste money going just one step.  There isn't enough difference between 3.55s and 3.73s.  If I were going to change gears I'd go with 4.10s.

I'm running 4.56s with 32s up in the mountains and it's a good combination.  31s with 4.10s is a good combo.

4.10 it is. Now how about recommendations on the brand of ring and pinion? I have used G2 in a Dana 30 and a Dana 35 and found them to be a bit noisy. I have also installed a mopar performance brand ring and pinion in a Dana 35 and liked them a lot.

Actually I think it was Dana brand not Mopar Performance.

Yukon for quiet quality back with good reputation. Usa gear little cheaper but have some noise but I don't hear it.

Ok. It seems like Yukon is very popular. I see their logo everywhere. I was a little worried they would have an aggressive gear cut like the G2 gears since they seem to be performance oriented. I'm asking this out of sheer ignorance, do Yukon gears have better meteorology than Dana Spicer?

Better

Ok cool. Better is better after all. Yukon's website is great. They actually have parts listed by application for the MJ Dana 44.

Yukon Comanche Dana 44 rear

I think I will get most of my axle parts from them. I'm looking at the Dana 44 Master Overhaul Kit, Axle Bearing And Seal Kit (X2), and MAYBE the Yukon Hardcore Diff Cover. Oh and the Ring & Pinion of course.

Looks like Amazon has the fastest shipping and best prices. Those parts total to $676.33. Of course I will do the equivalent for the front axle.

EDIT: just remembered the rear brake kit I'm planning on installing comes with axle bearings and seals, blackmagicbrakes.com/Dana-44-Rear-Disc-Brake-Conversion-Kit-w-Set-10-Bearing.

I’d do 3.73s if I were building myMJ again. And I’m on 31s with a 5 speed.

Ok, glad to have your opinion! The 5 speed does make our situations a little different I suppose but can you elaborate on why you would opt for the 3.73 set up? Better for highway cruising?

Kinda funny I was looking at the 3.93 ring and pinion set on Amazon and there is only one review,

Quote

After installation, gear was humming too much. I removed and took them to a rear axle shop for closer inspection and was told the ring gear had an edge that was too sharp and that this could cause the noise. Installed a factory Dana brand ring and pinion and all is good.

This is what I didn't like about my G2 gears. Without the wind from bad door seals and hum of bigger mud ties, I'm a little worried that I might be annoyed by the gears singing on the highway.

It would be better for highway cruising. I’m also in 4th gear doing 25 mph. I usually need to shift from 1st to 2nd in the middle of an intersection, which I’m not a fan of.

yes. Which with a manual is better overall performance wise. Automatic with 4.10s be equal. 3.73 came stock as it was a good setup for the rigs. Its added in the bigger tire that changes the grunt from the torque. Which transfer more power and stress down the line to driveshaft ujoint prematurely failing out to axle joints breaking and a bunch of more technical issues.

My theory is you plan for what you want the build for 2 sizes up.

I say at the price point you go 4.10s and don't look back by far. I raN 4.10s with 33, 35 and 37sdid awesome in the hills of Alabama with 37s in 4low. Nothing in 4 high with that set up. Your not looking for that but just saying you could. :brows:

I've been playing around with mine (4.10 gears + AX-15 + 31" tires) and found that it LIKES to run at ~3,000 rpm. Sure it can pull much lower than that, but my fuel mileage gets better as I keep RPM higher. Now a days I shift up at 2k rpm and shift down at ~3.5k or so. Lots of the county roads I drive are @ 55mph and I just leave it in 4th. So far I have gained 1-2mpg on the average tank driving this way. Plus its WAY more fun! :driving:

It has to be good for the engine (clean it out or something?) by revving to 4K on a regular basis, right?

Anyways TL;DR -->  4.10s for 31" tires. 4.88 for anything larger IMO.

I agrees. Pulled 22mpg with 4.10s and 37s in my 2dr xj going down hill from MI to Alabama. Went anywhere I wanted in 4 low.

Now have 4.88s with auto 37s  and i much enjoy driving 70 down the highway cruising 😎 still not perfect as need to freshin engine up now but enjoy the torquayness with the 4.88s.

Go 4.10s and call us later to thank us. :D

4.10 made my truck fun to drive for sure. The old 4.0 is screaming on the interstate though. I would definitely do it again.

Screaming?

With 31" tires and 4.10 gears, you should be turning 2645 RPM at 75 MPH. That's hardly "screaming."

As to the original question: 31" tires with 3.73 gearing is exactly the same final drive ration as stock tires with 3.55s. If you're thinking of swapping gears, definitely go for the 4.10s.
