It's actually the pin that goes in the lug crank handle for the spare. I've only ever seen and found a half dozen all in 86 mj. I could only find a part number online referencing an Mj specific part with Jack components(not the clip lol) but have yet to see a pic yet. I haven't met anyone who has seen one yet nor knew of them. I've given all away to people whom I've met personally except for 1 which I've kept for myself as a reminder. My own little corner of cool finds so to speak.
yxmj Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 I have a couple You take that and weld on an 1/2" socket extension.....then you pair it with the original YJ wheel wrench and you have a wheel wrench socket combo that can still be mounted in the factory bracket

I had to use a long screwdriver and a helper because I couldn't get enough grip on the screwdriver. It's a longbed, so I guess it might be an 86. I'm going to need one of those...

I wondered if it was factory too but I've either tossed them or haven't found them yet.

Pete M Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 ok, after much confusion trying to figure out how I would drop the spare on either my trailer or my 88, I looked through the purchase-day photos of my 88 and sure enough, there's a tire iron (the traditional kind) in the one pic. turns out I've apparently misplaced it (it's not in the box with the jack and interior bits). so I'll just need to find it and then buy another to put in the trailer.

So this why it always confused me as well. This stud I pictured in post, from my understanding fits the tire iron and that wratchet thing someone posted. I found 2 different sets in my journeys that had those old school black bags with everything mentioned included as well as the collapsed xj crank we are use to. I will add though that I've seen 2 different sizes of those as well. I have several of those everywhere. Now I've been cleaning/organizing again, no clue which is xj or mj. I just bought a 91 2dr xj that had a plow from a local jeep dealer. It's a jalopy but my 1st 2 Dr xj. Of course the jack stuff is missing for reference.

I wonder if that's the difference between xj and mj. The Mj #4 in pic is probably longer and that piece thereafter 87 eliminated hence why barely few know of its existence

They were used in different combinations to drop the spare from under the bed, and to take off the lug-nuts. Wonder how close the Dakota's ones are to the Comanche's?

Still a tricky one to stumble on but definitely worth looking for to help out more guys find these. I bet quite a few are in for a rude awakening if they go to ever use a factory spare it sounds.
schardein Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 MJ versus XJ jack handles. The longer one is from an 88 MJ. Shorter one is from a 91 XJ. I've lowered and raised the spare in my 91 MJ short bed using the factory handle with no issue.
Pete M Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 went out and tried it and the jack handle works just fine in my 88 but won't fit through the hole in the sheetmetal of my trailer. yes, I can cut that out of my way, but not until I give up on finding the correct tool. still can't find my tire iron to check that diameter.
