Pete M
so today I manage to temper my glorious high of finally pulling that 2wd aX-15 (long story) by promptly getting gear oil dribbling out of it all over my hat that I had set down next to the Jeep. fml so it's been washed with the rest of my work clothes but still reeks. next up is a lengthy soak in dish soap and warm water. no idea if that will actually do anything. thoughts? I love my work hat. I'd buy a thousand more if they were still available, but they are not.
silvertwinkiehobo
Try brake cleaner (essentially dry cleaning solvent). Try it on an inconspicuous area first, to make sure it doesn't strip color or melt plastic. If you're good to go, spray it into an old white rag, place another rag on the other side of the stain, and vigorously rub the stain.

Spray it on the hat until its dripping, throw in the washer and air dry it. Repeat if needed. 1986 Jeep Comanche X4WD GM 2.8L V6Front: Stock Dana 30Rear: Stock AMC 20Los Angeles CASent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Pete M
update: the 24hr soak (with occasional agitation) in dishsoap and warm water seems to have removed 90% of the smell. now starting a Febreze and sun-drying regimen...
rokinn
You might try a citrus cleaner on it next. I've gotten oil type stains out even after they have been through the dryer. They have spray type for clothes, another for BBQ grills, or just hand cleaner for mechanics. Enzymatic cleaners and odor removal for pets also. Nature's Miracle for example. 75sv1
I've tried Ozium on car interiors. Takes out the smoker smell. You can find it at True Value or the Auto Parts Stores. I've used K2R to lift oil out of wood. It is made to remove stains from fabrics. Not sure if it would work as well as other stuff.
