conrad_the_mj
I couldn't find a thread about sound system setups so I thought I'd start one. I'm thinking about getting some subs, but limited cab space causes some issues. Just wondering if/what other people have done with their comanches to increase sound quality. 88towmanche
I replaced all the factory speakers, the head unit and put in a small powered sub for right around $200 - was quoted $600+ to have it installed by a shop so opted to diy. The Sony head unit is a mechless marine model - easy install because of the short form, lot of room to stuff all the wiring behind. Found a local shop selling these for $45 ea - bought two, 1 for the truck and 1 for the boat. Crutchfield will tell you which scoche harness you need to hook up to factory wiring. The kicker speakers came off of Amazon - nothing fancy, they do the job. The Rockville powered sub was most expensive component and you need to buy a quality amp/sub wiring kit and run like a 4awg wire back from the battery..... Little cab pretty good sound
Smokeyyank
A deck and after market speakers are already going to be a massive upgrade over stock. Not going to find a lot of people opting for high end stereo equipment in a MJ, just isn't a platform conducive to audiophiles. Subs you are limited to either ones that go behind the seats or modifying the center console to fir a 8" in there. Only other option is something like this https://www.crutchfield.com/S-l0eoVAPGa64/p_113KSCSW11/Kenwood-KSC-SW11.html I run one in my WJ and it dose decent. Nothing close to my old system running 12's that would flex windows and shake your cavities loose. Really is going to boil down to the music you like to determine what to do. I mainly listen to rock/punk/hardcore so having a little bass besides what the 6x9s put's out is nice. And with the small sub it can keep up with the tighter bass. If I was listening to hip hop or something with more bass I'd try to get a 10" somewhere if not a 12".
Pete M
I bought the best quality 8" sub I could afford, and in the tiniest box I could find, and fed it hundreds and hundreds of watts of power... and it was fantastic. you don't need much in that tiny cab. at one point in time I also had 6x9s in little boxes too, but they were worthless after getting the sub so I removed them for the extra space. WahooSteeler
Like anything, lots of variables depending on what you want for sound, what your budget is and if the truck your daily. I have a very simple setup in mine and I'm quite pleased, and even surprised, at the sound. I have a high power 4 channel Pioneer head unit, JBL 5.25" door speakers, and a Bazooka 6.5" dual voice coil sub that fits neatly behind the passenger seat and does not impede seat movement at all. The key to this setup is the head unit. First, you can run the rear channels as a mono sub amp with a 2 ohm load, providing 70 watts. Doesn't sound like much, but the 2 ohm load makes a difference and that little tube can produce a surprisingly hard hit. The 8" dvc Bazooka would fit just as easily and certainly give more thump. The other key is the head unit has a high pass filter to work with the subwoofer setting. I have the cutoff set at 80hz on mine but with some songs adjust it to 100 or even 125hz. Point being, with the high pass filter I can fine tune the sound with only bass frequencies going to the sub and the mids and highs going to the door speakers. You may already know all the technical stuff, just pointing it out in case you are not familiar with it. And I'm sure other stereo brands besides Pioneer have similar capabilities. What I really liked about this setup, for me, was it did not require mounting and powering an amp. While not a big deal to do that, it's a clean and simple setup that gives me all the sound I need. MiNi Beast
So ill post up my less then $50 sound system. Took me 3 years to assemble but I'm pleased with outcome. I was the kid in school that had a loud system in my ride, but always had the Cheapest setup. I don't believe in paying lots of money for systems in a jeep that can use that money elsewhere 🤔. But I still like the boom boom that mellows out the b*@ch. I may be getting old and losing my hearing with all that load 😈 music that gram gram told me about 😒 or just riding with no doors and a snorkel by my head makes it hard to rock out. So to create a system on a budget but is loud. So as I go about my life I have been fortunate enough to come across components for the system. Like full set of amp wires out of a xj at a pick and pull. I cleaned out some rental properties and found the amp, hooked it up and it works. 😎 found both 8" subs on clearance at local auto store for $20 each. Only thing i paid for aside from lunch and pick and pull entry fee,, wires were free. The head unit i got given to me from a buddy as a token of appreciation as I help him with home repairs and maintenance. The sub boxes I acquired a year or so after the speaker purchase. Those also were someone's junk that I pulled old speakers out for fridge 🧲. Boxes were ported with tweeters. Sweetness. Other then installing fresh wires with soldering they boom boom. So like anything you can have nice stuff and you can pay for just that... but when you been poor all your life you understand the importance of that dollar amount when talking jeep. I rather put more under the jeep then making it a boom box. So if your patience and check around you can have Decent radio setup and here's just one example. At least my amp matches my head unit. 😆

Gjeep
I'll be building a MJ specific 'factory looking' sub box in the next couple weeks. It will be subtle and only running 2 Rockford 6.5" mid-woofers to compliment the 4 Rockford speakers I'm running with Punch amps. If you take a peek at my 'Son of Stink' build you'll see what I'm up to. My goal is to keep the interior stock looking.
Dzimm
Whatever you do, run 0 gauge wiring to the amp, don't mess with the cheaper kits that have 6ga and the like, also always make sure the ground is at least equal size (preferably larger) to the positive wire, preferably these are both 0 gauge. Also plan on running the wiring through the firewall, for the love of God DO NOT run wires through the door frame..
MiNi Beast
But the hole is already in the door frame??
