WahooSteeler
Does it matter what year Cherokee the rubber windshield surround molding is from?
ghetdjc320
When I had my windshield installed i had them install the newer style 97+ gasket instead of that metal trim. Looks really good imho

I believe that was in '94 but want to confirm. Found a brand new one on FB for cheap. I have the "chrome" trim and I like the way it looks, but unfortunately it does nothing to keep the elements out at all.
jdog
I think the switch was with the body style change, so

WahooSteeler
Laughing at myself because many times I will post a question basically being lazy and looking for the quick answer instead of researching on my own. Then an idea will pop in my head on how to quickly find the answer. I jumped on FB marketplace and searched XJ's starting with 1993 and sure enough there are plenty of pre-'97s with the rubber gasket so even if some of them had metal trim and replaced with rubber, it seems to be good from at least '94 on. krustyballer16
If you're having a glass place put it in, Just be safe and tell them its a 98 xj. Won't matter once the truck is there. Don't explain to them anything. It'll confuse them and they'll argue and maybe refuse to even do it with different rubber...Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk

Wounded_Fighter
Do you need to cut the metal retainer tabs out if you had the tabs for metal trim?

No need to take the metal studs off that are welded to the frame around the windshield, but I WOULD remove the little clips, especially if they are the steel kind. They have a tendency to cause rust, even when they are not holding anything down. I am assuming you are having a auto glass shop put the new gasket (molding) in at the same time as installing the windshield itself, because the rubber fits over the edge of the glass prior to being adhesively bonded to the window opening. Yeah I'm going to have a shop do it. my truck had the plastic clips. I had the glass removed so I can do some paint if need be.
