I'm eating crow on this one.

Recommended Posts

I jumped the gun a bit on this one. It doesn’t have a d44 front. I learned my lesson.

As the title states I just picked up a 1991 comanche with with Dana 44 front and rear. I know the consensus on the internet is that all came with a dana 30 front. This is my 3rd Comanche and I’ve owned 3 xj’s as well so I’m decently familiar with the platform.

Does anyone one have any insight on this truck? I will post pictures when I can get it on my rack. Possibly this afternoon or tomorrow.

So, you are suggesting it came with a D44 front from the factory?

Yes, pics please.

I’m more of on a fact finding mission. As I stated above I’ve owned a few and I know common knowledge is that it came with a d30.

I'm trying to find a legit vin decoder and will be looking for the build sheet in the truck today as well.

I plan to this afternoon. Has axle tags on both still too. I will post those as well.

There's not an option code for the front axle. There bad news is the parts catalog only lists a Dana 30 for a front axle option.

Thank you for decoding the vin. I wonder if it was a dealership option. I will post pictures here in a few min of the axle codes. If the axle was casted in 1990-1991 I would be surprised if it wasn’t on it when the customer purchased it original.

So I have to eat crow on this one. I got a little ahead of myself and I got a bit excited. It is definitely a dana 30. I subject myself to all the criticism I deserve. And I won’t post prematurely again. My lesson Is learned.

How DARE YOU own up to making an honest, innocent mistake regarding two pieces of equipment that upon casual inspection look fairly similar? Don't you know that the right thing to do on the internet is to argue with anyone who asks for proof, engage in whataboutism, and move the goal posts when consensus disagrees with your assertions?

Really though... common mistake. I have heard rumors of D44 fronts on some XJs that were built in Venezuela.

you're not the first to mistake a 30 for a 44, probably not the last. :L:

Thank you guys. I appreciate that it isn’t just a roast fest. I’m definitely pretty embarrassed to have jumped the gun so much on it.

From time spent in South America with my wife, visiting her family, it is my understanding that those rumors are true. However, I can't say that I've seen one. My wife was from Chile. I've been wheeling with a friend in Chile, but the Jeeps in Chile are built in the U.S., not Venezuela.
