Ballast Resistor????

Recommended Posts

While putting in a new radiator I noticed a ceramic resistor on the drivers side of the engine compartment and it's split down the long length and held together by two wire ties.  Went to two two different parts stores and no one could find anything matching the number on mine or tell me what it might be.  Anyone have a part number and brand for a 1990 4.0.

It's the fuel pump ballast resistor, ~1.3 ohms value. You can replace it with any similarly configured porcelain power resistor of the same value. The Standard RU-13 is a good choice and it has the more secure ring terminals.

Napa replacement number is ICR13 or ICR13sb. It was added to the fuel pump feed to cut down the noise.

That one has the crappy push-on terminals like the OEM resistor. They get loose over time and can fall off.

Bought the RU-13.  Labeled on the unit itself as 1.6 ohms.  Stock unit is labeled 1.1 ohms.  Stock unit reads with my ohm meter (Craftsman) as 1.6.  RU-13 reads 2.2 ohms.  Any thoughts as to appropriateness of the "upgrade."  Switching from closed to open cooling and looking to relocate as well as upgrade this unit.
