I’ve got a chance to get a Dana 60 that’s already under a Comanche. Really don’t need it I’ve got 44s on mine already. But I’m thinking about it and flipping it. Guy wants 200 for it.Money’s tight this month so it could be a stretch. Just want to know what you guys think you’re a little input. Thanks

Rear?  Is it special, or just a truck axle with perches welded on at 42"?

Well there is a faded out line up a sign on the door. Truck belong to a place that sold appliances. So this truck was probably used to carry around appliances delivered them and pick up old ones. So if they were there original owners they may have ordered that axle because the truck was doing a lot of hauling. All the purchase looks stock. The pumpkin it looks like it’s been painted green. A shop may have done that on a rebuild. The reason I say it might be a rebuild rebuilders there is nothing on the truck that carries anything other than the stock paint job. It didn’t have a lift on it. Everything else is bone stock. No other weird paint. The only thing out of the ordinary is the green pumpkin. And that’s just the
cover is painted green.

It's definitely a D60 and not a D44?

Semi-float?  What's the bolt pattern?  I guess you would be able to drill a semi-float D60 shaft for 5x4.5, but it would be kinda silly.  IMHO the semi-float D60 is kinda useless anyways, most are still just a 30 spline axleshaft but weigh more and have less clearance than the D44.  If you need that much strength you're better off going to a full-float setup and real strength (35 spline axleshafts).

Somebody should just buy the whole Comanche.

It 10 bolts count them 3 times just to make sure. I’ve got Dana 44 front and rear on both my Comanche and Cherokee those are 9 bolt patterns. It got the larger rear drums on it too. Pattern is an egg on its side just like the D44s. It’s 10 bolts not 9.

That’s the details I need to know before getting this thing. Thanks

I’m not rock crawling or anything like that so I really don’t need it now. But if I could get it for a little bit better price I’ll snap it up and sit on if it’s full floating.

Can you post pics?

I’ll get there early Friday. Its about 1:15 min away from me. I'm going to check it out again. I’ll study up on free floating Identification again and if it is I’ll grab it

I’ve go the axle tab some where here but it’s pretty rusty. I’ll look

for it again and see if I can get anything off it.

Full float axles have gigantic hub that sticks out through the wheel.  No regular full floating truck axle can run the 5x4.5 bolt pattern, the hub is simply too large.

Incommando's comment that it might be out of an old Mopar would make sense. Some did use a semi-floating D60 and they were drilled for the small 5x4.5 pattern.  They're also 30 spline shafts and typically came with tall gears, but who knows without popping the cover.

No, they didn't order it with a Dana 60, because the factory never offered a Dana 60 as an option. The Dana 44 was the optional, heavy-duty axle.

I'd say if YOU want a dana 60, buy it. Don't expect to flip it, because I doubt you'll find a buyer.

Not sure if your correct about that. From what have always understood and have been backed upon this forum. You could order them with any upgrade you wanted as long as you were willing to pay. That came from a man who actually worked at the dealership were Comanches were sitting on the show room floor. My father retired from GM and we ordered May upgraded vehicles through GM. I got a completely stock 3rd owner 88 Pioneer with a factory D44s both front and rear. That easily may have been a special order. All you have to do is pay the money put the factory order in and be willing to what a month or longer. My family did it many times. So ya it defiantly could be a factory ordered truck. You just had to fork the money out. That being a truck that was a commercial vehicle ie belonging to an appliance company ya that could be the case.

Fine. Believe whatever you want. Find the build sheet and tell us what option code was assigned to a Dana 60 axle.

what vehicle was the front D44 out of that came in your truck?  you being the third owner, how can you 100% say it was factory?  "that easily may have been a special order" makes me believe you don't have proof, just someones word.

also, a dana 60 was not a factory option.  like don said, the dealer could have installed one for a person (although i HIGHLY doubt they did).

where are the pics?

South American XJ's did supposedly get a HP Dana44 front axle, although again I have no photographic evidence of that. And it's unlikely one would've floated itself north. The deeper I dig into the various projects I've gotten myself into the more I think I'll eventually find myself travelling around the world by hopping from wrecking yard to wrecking yard...

In glancing through the parts manuals I found nothing indicating any Jeep vehicle from 1981 on was available with a factory front D44, including the Exports. The only Jeep with rear D60 availability I found was the J20.
