Why, It's Colder Than...

There were three Eskimos in Alaska, and one time while they were at their local bar,

they got to talking about how cold it was outside, and how cold their igloos were.

They could agree on everything but whose igloo was the coldest, so they decided to

determine who, indeed, had the coldest igloo. They went to the first Eskimo's igloo,

where he said "Watch this!" and poured a cup of water into the air. Well, the water froze

in mid-air and fell onto the floor solid. "Not bad" said the other Eskimos, but each maintained

their igloo was colder still. So they went to the second Eskimo's igloo, and he said "Watch this!"

and took a big breath and exhaled, whereupon his breath froze into a big lump and fell to the floor.

"Wow, that's colder than mine!"said the first Eskimo. But the third Eskimo exclaimed his was colder still.

So they ended up at the third Eskimo's igloo. He said "Watch this!" and went into the bedroom,

looked under three huge black thick furs, and retrieved one of several small balls of ice there.

He took one of the small balls of ice and put it in a spoon, and held a match under it.

When it heated up enough, it went "FFFAAAARRRRTTT".

Went home for Christmas this last week, and every single day was below -20°F, a couple below -30, and one morning was -43°F when I first looked at our thermometer. (Bimetallic coil and a dial guage, for the curious... All our other thermometers were off the scale), fortunately that didn't last long. -50 and -60°F windchills.

Whether you're used to it or not, it bites. My alternator failed yesterday in the middle of nowhere. Barely made it into the city and to the only parts store open, and got the only one in stock they had listed. Sitting staring at it in the parking lot was the worst. I could leave my mitts off for all of a minute before my fingers started resisting moving. Gave up and begged a warm space from a friend's girlfriend's parents who I was vaguely aware were in the city.  Used to it or not, that -40 mark, windchill or not, is pretty much a wall. You just can't function below that. But realistically the worst temperature is just below freezing. Even if you're used to it. The air still holds so much humidity, things melt on contact, most jackets are really overkill so you sweat, and you lose heat so much faster when you're wet. And the cold also sneaks up on you, it doesn't hit you as fast or as hard as it does at extreme negatives, so you don't realize how cold your fingers are until you're struggling to move them. Then they burn as they warm back up.

But still, the skin on my hands isn't doing great after last night. That doesn't happen when it's warmer.

Yeah, Gogmorgo, just kidding about the “you’re used to it” thing.  I’m just glad we don’t get much of this cold weather (14 F tonight, 24 high today).  This old, fat Southern boy would be headed for the tropics if I had to face the stuff you guys up North see on a regular basis for long periods.  And, I’ve noticed over the past several years that the older I get, the worse effect the cold has on me.

Luckily, we haven’t had and don’t expect any significant moisture during the projected cold stretch.  If we get snow we’re pretty well screwed.  No salt trucks, no plows and no one who knows how to drive in the stuff.

Stay warm and keep those fingers well protected!

Yah I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.   The Leafs do have one thing though that no other team in the league has and that they never will have.   It's a black & white photo of their last Stanley Cup win!

btw ... long suffering fan here.

Had to look it up - 66/67 season was their last cup win. Damn, that has been awhile.

That's... not hugely inaccurate. Lol.

The Leafs will never win the cup. Everyone knows this. It'll cause a massive rift in the time-space continuum.

The biggest advantage to how cold it got here is laughing at all those people in the north-east who are laughing at people in the south being cold because they think it's so much colder where they are... We don't get cold warnings until -40 and our school busses run down to -45°C. And I really don't live all that far north.

One of the greatest Canadian passtimes is complaining about the weather. :D

What will cause an even more massive rift is if a Canadian based hockey team ever wins the cup again.

Now look here hoser. You take that back or I'll have to put your head in a snowbank, eh? Ya can't just go around spouting $#!& like that or someone will have to put you in your place before too much longer.

/is only mildly offended.

funny but kind of true. When I live in Florida I watched the Canadians swim in the Atlantic ocean in Feb and Jan with a cold wind blowing. Those are some hardy people. I really like Canadians. Hard working tuff people.
