rylee144
Hi all- I found a gauge cluster that claims to be for a 1988. I have attached the photos of my current cluster and a link to the one for sale. The part number is off but rightfully so because they look different. Did they make two styles in 1988? Can I swap this one in? Thanks https://www.ebay.com/itm/JEEP-CHEROKEE-XJ-INSTRUMENT-GAUGE-CLUSTER-PART-ES895600284-OEM-1988/152775553112?hash=item239221f058:g:CFsAAOSwrFtZ~5ed&vxp=mtr
coolwind57
Can one assume the difference is that one is for Auto transmission (no tachometer) and one is for manual (tachometer)? Sorry I am not answering your question, but I'm in the market for upgraded gauges myself. I want to go from idiot gauges (automatic transmission) to full gauge setup. HOrnbrod
Auto or manual trannsmission has nothing to do with the type of cluster. Both transmissions can use either idiot light or full gauge clusters. General cluster rule of thumb is blue case = Renix, white case = HO. The Renix clusters have a manual speedometers and use cables. There are some differences in the cables between the years. HO speedos are all electronic. Did they make clusters for automatic transmission trucks with tachs?
Green Mesa XJ
I’ve noticed both styles of clusters. I’ve always thought the early blue were discontinued by the HO years but I seen some HO with simple clusters that look like the early non gauge idiot light clusters. I’m using a full gauge cluster like that 88, mine I think is off a 89 or 90. as long as it a mechanical speedometer it should work. Only difference in the eighties is the speedometer cable changes about 1987, the early 84-86 use a slightly different way of securing to the back of the speedometer. I believe I was able to still plug my 85 speedometer cable into the 89 cluster. Eventually I did order the correct cable. johnj92131
The cluster in the picture is 1986/87 style speedometer face. Notice the sweep for 7:00 to 4:00? The eBay cluster is a late 87+ to 1990 style. Notice the 9:00 to 4:00 sweep? 1986 had a different speedometer cable connection to the speedometer. I can not tell you if the pictured cluster is 86 or 87. That sweep was offered with both speedometer cables

mass.casualty
Following as i would like to swap the stock base model blue, full idiot light cluster for the black/white/red cluster. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
kryptronic
I'm interested in swapping an earlier blue Renix cluster into my HO. Am I crazy? I don't mind pulling the clusters apart and mixing and matching parts. The sweep on the faceplates for the tach and speedo look off. Has anybody done this? Just for looks as I'm doing a throwback AMC interior.
schardein
The "blue" style gauges were available on the HO models. I have seen them on rare occasions. Here is a pic of an HO cluster I pulled from a 1991 Cherokee. It was a police model with a column shift (so the trans indicator is present), 120mph speedo (7 to 4 sweep) with trip odometer. Also an extended idle switch where the fog light switch would normally be. I swapped this into my MJ, plug and play after switching the senders and adjusting the odometer to match my miles (yes it can be done on HO electronic speedos). My original cluster was idiot lights, but it did have the blue gauges. Also, no trip odometer. I'm not sure, but I think these were the only options for blue gauges in the HO years, either the idiot light cluster or these hard to find police clusters. I've also seen the police cluster like this without the auto trans indicator.
