Body Trim

Hey Guys,

I recently moved to CT and recently inherited my Dad's '87 Sportruck (local to GA for 30 years).  Zero rust, 107K original miles!!  It's a gem - all original, never wrecked except a small ding (L/R Qtr).

However, I am missing some trim pieces and a Comanche emblem.  Can someone point me to a place I can find OEM Comanche trim without scouring the local junk yards?

I'd have to say you'd be incredibly lucky to find them at a JY and I can't find any direct matches online for aftermarket. I would refer you to  the post below, it covers the gambit. There are a number of moulding options available from the after market that are "close enough" if you're ok with that. If you really want OEM parts you could keep an eye on eBay. Thanks, Skorpyo.  I've scoured ebay for MJ stuff - have also seen the Mopar sellers..  I just don't trust it without seeing it.

Like in your thread, I guess I'll have to find something that is close and replace it all.  Not a stickler but definitely want something that looks nice and close to original.

The stock MJ's with no trim just don't look right.

Look on craigslist in your area.  You may find someone selling or parting out an MJ.  You could piece together your missing/needed parts.

Is that molding just a rubber strip that is double sided taped on? That's how my 95 XJ is, I'm thinking you could look for it on older XJs and cut to the size you need.

I believe the trim on XJs is very similar, at least in profile. I have a set of Sport moldings with the red stripe and a set of all-black Pioneer moldings, and they look the same except for color. You could probably get pretty close by cutting the XJ pieces to size if you can't find the genuine article. Of course, the fender and door pieces from the XJ are the same as the MJ.

^^  This is true. My body side molding is a mix-mix from various XJs and MJs. The chrome center strip (gotta have that) is aftermarket 5/8" half round.

I like that want to put it on my Pioneer. did you have to cut it? If so how did you finish off the cut ends so they would look molded. That's the only thing stopping me is how to finish it off to look decent. Your truck looks good. Great color combination and I'm a sucker for that Chrome finish. Still can't bring myself to put black paint on a shinny rim. It's just not going to happen in this lifetime. Call me old school all you want, I could give a rats @$$.

If you be careful about your cuts, the ends should look like they are supposed to be there.  The rubber looks exactly the same all the way through so if your cut is straight and not jagged, it will look normal.

Sorry about my earlier post. I miss read things and deleted it. Ya I like that truck. The graphics go along way. I do like the original look of the silver bumpers on Eliminators though but that's just personal taste. Only aN MJ guy would realize what it means.

I think all the Pioneers got body side molding as part of the factory package. It was all black though. Your's may have fallen by the wayside over the years.....

The MJ is too slab sided for it all to be one color without having some accents IMO. Wonder if the Jeep designers thought so too, and if that's why such a huge percentage of MJs had some sort of stripe package.

all up to opinion.  I think the MJ looks great naked.  

 

in the end, I imagine it has a lot to do with everyone wanting to look unique.  to differentiate themselves from the "base model" (aka: boring version).

conformist to the anti-conformist ideas?    I think what my brain is blindly stabbing at is the idea that people desperate for individualism eventually all start to look alike.  like JKs on big tires with fancy bumpers and a million lights and whatnot.  

 

or maybe I'm just too tired today to take on the philosophy of capitalism/consumerism vs pure automotive design vis-a-vis glued on bits of plastic.
