Peugeot Ba10 No reverse

I'm be going to pick up a comanche this weekend and it has the ba10-5 but the owner said reverse just grinds. He said the trans had reverse, then went mudding and now doesn't. Any clue what could of happened or possible fixes?

Anything could have happened, it's hard to diagnose the cause on an issue like that.  Best fix is to get an ax15.   It's a much stronger trans and anyone on here will say the same thing.

The Novak website says that repairing a BA 10 is not worth the money.  That's probably true.

 

Search for an AX15 (94 or later with the external slave cylinder) on Craigslist.  Look at auto parts AND cars/trucks.  You could find a XJ for real cheap.  You then get lots of useful parts.

 

The cost to repair the BA10 could be more than a used AX15.

 

(Include in you signature a description of your MJ [Yr, engine, trans, axles, mods made by you or PO] and you location. )

drop that tranny and leave on the side of the road, get a beaten up XJ for cheap and use its tranny, either AX15 or the AW4 are good...

how well does it go into first?  could be the clutch isn't fully disengaging.

When we 1st had BA10 we had issues after a while. the internal slave would not press all the way and make it not go in rev. For a while we shut off put in rev, then start up. We got ax-15 fast after that. that was in 1990.

Like Pete said, it could be clutch not fully disengaging or possibly the crank pilot bearing is seizing up to the trans input shaft. (Mine did that at a traffic light and I almost launched into the car in front of me)

Quick test: Check clutch fluid level, then put the Jeep into reverse (make sure the mount isn't sagging and making the shift boot put pressure on the shifter)

 

and THEN start the truck with your foot already on the clutch.

 

Be aware it may try to drive away in reverse (with your foot still on the clutch) or it will just grind like it did before (bent shift fork or something else internal to the trans. )
