I prefer the floor shifter too, but column shift with a tilt wheel was a pretty rare option on these trucks. May have been swapped in, considering short beds never came with a D44.

apparently (from what I've been told) some later years could have been had with the 44 under a short bed (some sort of offroad package?).  but only long beds had the metric ton package.

If so it was never "officially" available from what I've seen. I have brochures up to 91 and none make any mention of the heavy duty axle except in the MT package. I could see it happening though. Possibly a case of "well, if you REALLY want it..."

Double check the 1987' brochure Minuit,

I know I have one or two that list the 44 for 87',

before Chrysler changed things the D44 was available 3 different ways;

part of the MJ Big Ton/Metric Ton package

part of the MJ & XJ Off Road package (1987 only)

or as a stand alone HD rear axle option.

Officially it was just a Big Ton/Metric Ton thing for 1988+

but it seems like a bunch of them trickled out there in XJ's and MJ's in 88 & 89 too.

Ok, I must have missed it somehow because my 87 brochure says it too. It lists the Trac-Lok rear, off-road package, and MT package as coming with the D44. None of those packages mention the D44 in my August '87 printed brochure for the '88 model year though. I'm sure some slipped through the cracks and I'm sure at some point someone was sweet-talked into slipping a D44 under an '88 shortbed.

I'm done arguing about this. His truck has a D44 no matter who put it there. Without the build sheet we'll never know :)

My '87 Pioneer is a shortbed with a Dana 44. I bought it from the daughter of the original owner, so I'm 99.937% certain it's the factory axle.

You could add it without getting a "package". Simple. I ordered at least 10 of them.

Wow! So impressive...........

I'm not trying to impress anyone, just provide facts, things I saw and did in the day. Things that folks are guessing and wondering about.

What the @#$% is your problem with me and Renix stuff anyway. It's getting @#$%ing old @#$%ing fast.

I don't NEED to be here ya know.......

Well, I do hate the Renix system. It's a poorly engineered, unreliable, and maintenance intensive system AMC was forced into trying to save their company since everyone else was going FI. Deep down you know it. I'd rather have carbs and with HEI ignition. But that's just me.

You do a hell of a job keeping these guys' Renix trucks going. And that's all good since after all, since the Renix MJs far outnumber the Chrysler models.

Well, if you ever dealt with it in person, you would realize it's not as bad as you think. It's actually very reliable, quite forgiving and easy to understand. Correct. The Renix rigs in MJ form highly outnumber the HO models. Mine all run great and rarely require any work.

If people would just do Tips 1 through 5 completely and without cutting corners right off the bat, their Renix experience would be lovely.
