I have a 1989 MJ. I have been working on it for about a month now. I have replaced the fuel pump and rebuild the BA 10 5 speed ( I know.... Why? ) I have big plans for this truck but I need it running now. Many swaps are planned. However at this moment I keep running into the same problem. Finding the correct parts. The major parts supply houses seem to think that MJ and XJ are the same parts. Painfully I have found out this is not true. So here is the question. Were is the best place for MJ parts???

What have you found that isn't the same on the XJ?

Everything from the doors forward is identical to four-door XJ's. Some stuff past that as well, but not much. Junkyards are good for most parts, and just about the only place you can most of the MJ-specific ones. You can also check out the classifieds here. eBay, Craigslist, etc work but you've got to keep a close eye if you're looking for specifics.

Well the trans mount is different and so is the fuel pump. Has anybody found a new fuel pump lately???? I mean the whole assembly. Yes you can find fenders and bumper and stuff like that but try looking for parts to get the darn thing down the road!!!!

Trans mount should be identical to the XJ's, pending you get one for the correct transmission. With the exception of rear driveshaft length and the rear axle's spring perches, the drivetrains are identical between XJ and MJ. Engine, trans, tcase, crossmember, axle innards, everything.

The fuel pump assembly (sending unit) is a tricky one. You see them occasionally on eBay. If you're lucky you might find one in a junkyard. There are a few companies out there who will rebuild one, but it's not cheap. The pump itself is going to be the same as the XJ with the identical engine, so you can get by without a gas gauge for a while, no?

I have yet to not be able to find a part absolutely critical to driving my MJ. Some of the MJ-specific body panels, trim pieces, etc, maybe. But all the basic driveability parts except the rear driveshaft are shared with the XJ.

Here is a DIY on the fuel pump for you, complete with part source info:

Take a look here for a whole bunch of how to threads, many with specific parts sources/substitutes:

Correct and hard to find regardless, I found one NIB off eBay a while back for $60 after shipping (schwiiing!) back when the Canuck buck still had some value.

Last I looked, Crown still made them but at bend over pricing.

Still debating whether to use it ... or move forward with the AX-15 swap.

Other that the propotioning valve, the fuel pump assembly (the XJ units can be adapted), and the box light/switch, some rear harness wiring and the ebrake assembly ... It's mainly XJ.

No, they are an oddball, but the MJ and XJ use the same goofy Peugeot mount.

The AX4, 5, 15, and automatic mounts are all pretty much the same with merely crossmember placement differences.

The Ba 10/5 on the other hand is about as gangly as gangly can get. That damn mount is nearly the size of the transfer case.
