Can someone answer this, I have the factory tape deck in my MJ I have to manually turn it on every time I start the truck. Is this normal or is there a way to make it come on with the key. Also does the factory deck have lighting behind it? Because mine is completely blacked out.

Mine comes on with the key and automatically goes back to whatever radio station it was on before (if there's a tape in it, it starts playing from where it stopped automatically). Both the LCD and buttons should have illumination. The LCD should be lit at all times (dimming when headlights are on) and the panel should be backlit with headlights on.

Take the radio out and check the wiring. It seems to me like either the radio is screwed up or it isn't getting power on the constant 12V or illumination wires. Do you have a test light? That would solve the mystery right away.

Jeep radios are somewhat unusual in that they have two illumination inputs, one for the LCD display, and one for knob illumination. The knob illumination is controlled by the dash dimmer pot on the headlight switch and is 12V ignition switched. The LCD illumination input is also 12V ignition switched, but it's a constant 12V and not controlled by the dimmer pot.

There is also a constant battery 12V input that keeps the memory setting intact with the key off, and one 12V ignition switched input that turns the radio on with the key. When you turn on the key, the radio comes on to the same state it was when last shut off.

So, it sounds like you have a wiring problem.

Well, the CD player crapped out on the bench, and I had to have it repaired. It needed a laser and some of the drive parts replaced. Stuck it in this afternoon. Had a little problem with the power antenna going up and down with the CD player OFF/ON button and It's working great now. Thanks for the extra bracket Adam, it also worked fine after a bit of tinkering.

Hi Hornbrod. I have that same radio/CD player and it has issues. I would love to get it working to install in my 1996 XJ Country. Where did you get your deck repaired at? Mine powers up but the CD player is not playing back. It has been a while since I powered it up so I might try to do that today. I'd love to get it working. You can PM or email me if you like.

As an aside, I first found out that Jeep actually had a CD deck option when I bought an original 1996 Jeep Cherokee/MOPAR accessories brochure. It was a dealer installed option as I understand.

I just installed the unit in my Jeep and lo and behold, the radio works. The disc player accepts the disc but then ejects it. I'm guessing the same issue as yours. May need a new laser, drive belts, etc.. I don't see a way to set the clock. How do you do it? I searched for a manual online to no avail. Thanks.

Thanks again. Where did you get that manual? Did you get it with the radio? The radio is rare enough but the manual is even more so it seems. What do the other buttons do? I know what LOC and BND mean but what about MO, PS, LD and A-S mean?

Several years ago I had a second unit and it also had issues. I sent it to be repaired to a repair business in central Florida. They told me it couldn't be repaired and never sent it back. I'm happy the radio works.

Thanks, much appreciated. If I can ask, what did they charge?

For reference, I got a quote of $120-140 from that company to repair the intermittent backlight on my otherwise 100% functional AM/FM/Cassette deck. That's several times the value of the radio, so I just decided to live with it. Considering these Mitsubishi built decks all are subject to bad solder joints I could probably poke around and find at least one bad joint that is causing the problem. I might have considered spending that much for repairs if it was a factory CD in question.

Yes, they are expensive. I called several companies to repair my Mopar 82300393 first, and no one would touch it as it's such a rare unit. They didn't even list it. This was the only outfit that had wiring diagrams and parts available to fix the damn thing. So there wasn't much choice if I wanted it fixed. So I bent over.   :ack:
