Rear bumper differences?

If it fits an 87, it'll fit an 86.

But there is a difference, it just doesn't matter here. In '86, there were no short beds, they weren't introduced until '87. Originally, the bumper brackets sat completely flat against the frame, as they would do on any long bed MJ from any year. On the short beds, the rear spring shackle hanger is much closer to the end of the frame, to the point where the bumper bracket needs a bulge in it to clear it. '86's and some earlier long beds got the flat brackets until stock ran out, but they stopped making the flat brackets and both short and long beds started getting the clearanced brackets.

But that doesn't really affect you. If it fits an 87+ short bed, it'll fit an '86 or any other year long bed, it's just not guaranteed to go the other way.

It's a Westin (Fey) universal, as previously noted. Remember that it also needs the Westin (Fey) mounting brackets.

No necessarily, I have an FEY bumper mounted with OEM MJ Brackets on my Dads 89 ;)

Did you weld it on? Doesn't look to me like the factory brackets will mate up with the Few bumper. (I have three of them.)

That said, there were two different patterns for the factory rear bumper brackets, and I've only seen one of them.

did anyone ever figure this out? I want to get an FEY bumper but don't want to spend the 50$+ for the brackets.

The two styles of factory bumper brackets are effectively the same. One just has a bulge to accommodate the rear spring hanger on a short bed. The bolt holes are identical. Will the Fey bumper mount to them? That I can't say.

There should be one bolt going into the bottom, four in the side. Can you post a pic of the whole bumper? Doesn't look stock, especially not with a sticker like that, if it reflects actual load ratings on the bumper hitch. Those aren't the Fey numbers, either, so I'm wondering what it is?

Looks a lot like the Fey. Maybe they were different back then?

It was fairly common back in the day for trucks to ship without rear bumpers, as they weren't required. Lots of dealers or the first owner would either add a custom or aftermarket bumper as a cheaper alternative to the factory bumper, or else just leave it off. The Fey bumpers are pretty common. I've also seen a few dealer-installed tube bumpers.

So yours could be the "original" bumper to the truck, but still not be a factory bumper.

This is correct. But in the early 90s, the pickup truck manufacturers were mandated to supply bumpers with all the trucks they sold. As a result manufacturers of aftermarket bumpers lost a lot of their sales and went belly-up. Hercules Automotive, the original manufacturer of your bumper, went out of business and was acquired by Westin who continued most of their products with their name on it.
