That's NUTS! What's wrong with a motor and a switch? It's been working for nearly fifty years. Haven't automotive engineers ever heard, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? AeroNautical
I think I heard that someone was also able to hack a new cherokee and literally drive it remotely, with a driver inside unable to take control of the vehicle. That would mean the steering would have to be electronic, motors and push rods. Whats wrong with a good old fashioned gear box? I can't believe the POS even sold 206,000, let alone recall them. Minuit
Chrysler/Fiat really have outdone themselves on this one.

There are electronics, "computerized", in the wiper modules for Jeeps since the 1980s. This just happens to be a new issue.
HOrnbrod
Yep. The intermittent wiper module a lot of us have is one of them. Probably just a glorified resistor network, but still a wiper control module. The "fix" is easy. Just unplug it and remove it from the harness or replace it. Probably a replacement issue with the new Cherokees also, just with more shielding on the module.
mfpdm
I call BS. I think this is a made up story to address something more sinister. :peek:
ggcnash
Fiat and Chrysler had recalls for the issue of hacking there system on the Cherokee. The fix was a memory stick and about 5 minutes. The guys that took it public now work for uber! The race for the autonomous driving auto is on.
ComancheFan1991
So the wipers on a 1996 Grand Caravan would be self destructive if dry operation could cause failure, as they had a tendency to turn themselves on randomly.
Pete M
a-yup :D a bit spooky the first time it happens.
Minuit
When I was younger my parents had a '96 Voyager with the 3.0 V6. It too had the mystery automatic touch-free wipers. Pretty much nothing electrical on that thing worked. Slow, oil burning, lifter ticking pile of garbage. Smelled like mold too. Motivated me to get the MJ driving so I didn't have to drive around in that miserable thing (it went to the junker not long after I got my license). Never stranded us, though. gogmorgo
We have a couple of those vans at work. Identical in that mauve colour. I don't know about the other one, but the one I had to use was a total turd. Nothing worked. The only reason the wipers worked was because of a crude switch on the dash that one of our mechanics put in. They finally replace it this year. If any of you happen to watch the Canadian gov surplus site, and see a couple minivans from Riding Mountain, trust me, they're only worth their weight in scrap.
