rearview
Up or down on an 87/88 4,0 It is easier to assemble the extension for the oil filter while out of the truck. Is there any damage/clearance problems with the swinging iron on the install. .
Eagle
I don't understand the question. What are you asking?
HOrnbrod
Better to assemble the oil filter adapter with the engine back in the truck - with new o-rings of course. Or install the HO adapter fittings for the filter. It's not that difficult and you don't break anything.
rearview
The oil filter can be assembled so the filter screws from the top, or in from the bottom. Can not remember the position and the photos don't give me the clue.
HOrnbrod
Worthwhile upgrade. http://comancheclub.com/topic/44420-mj-renix-to-ho-oil-filter-adapter-o-ring-data/ http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/5421/
87MJTIM
When my engine was rebuilt, they turned the adapter to the rear. The only way I could remove the filter was from under the truck. PITA!. The excess oil would spill out on the starter. I turn the adapter upwards (filter pointing down.) Much better.
Eagle
When this family of engines was first introduced by AMC in the mid-60s, the oil filter screwed directly to the block. But ... engine compartments were larger and less crowded back then. I haven't paid attention, just accepted that they put the adapter there for a reason. If you can flip it so the filter hangs down, why can't you just eliminate the adapter entirely?
Minuit
It can be eliminated, but you have to use an undersize filter (bad) and even then there are issues with clearance between the oil filter and motor mounts (VERY bad). Do the Renix engines not have the roll pin that keeps the oil filter adapter pointing up?

Which, of course, is why they used an adapter to change the orientation of the filter.
Knucklehead97
I threw around the idea of pointing mine towards the back like the HO's did. I even bought the parts for it. Decided against it though because I do enjoy being able to take mine off from the top. And it's awesome just being able to use a boxed in wrench on the Renix adapter. I do recommend taking the nipple off an HO adapter and installing it on your Renix adapter. I now run a Ford FL-A1 filter and am happy with it... In addition to "the fleet" of MJs and my original '88 XJ, I currently own two 2000 XJs and a 2001 XJ. All the new style XJs have the 4.0L with the oil filter mounted horizontally toward the rear, and I have no problem changing the filter from above. HOrnbrod
^^ Ditto. I put a cloth over the starter motor though in case I drop the filter and it welds itself to the starter motor.
Rockfrog
Same, I have the 88 MJ, and a 2000 XJ ... I prefer the horizontal mounting of the XJ. The straight up on the MJ makes a huge mess. I also use a Ford FL-1A and have since my first jeep in 92.
87MJTIM
I could not get the filter up thru the top with the oil pressure unit, cannister and cable in the way. I tried numerous ways to get it out. When I unscrewed the filter, the oil would drain out on to the starter. I had to crawl under the truck and pull the filter out from around the starter and LCA. PITA!!!! I turned it so the filter points down. Most of the oil drains back into the engine. The little that does run out can be caught with a rag. The filter originally came with the filter pointed down. Knucklehead97
^^^ thats why I could not get mine from the top. Still have the charcoal canister and everything above it if I were to mount it horizontally. I really hate how much of a mess comes from it pointing vertically. I will probably try to make the horizontal way work after I relocate my charcoal canister. Just didn't sound good at the time I was changing my OFA Orings. The bottom of the filter points toward the rear. You can see the correct orientation in this pic:

The bottom of the filter points toward the rear. Thanks just replaced those orings too! Question for you, do you think this will cause premature leaking with the h.o adapter, or will this be fine till I get tired of it and change it? HOrnbrod
Naw, I don't think so. If it were going to leak it would be leaking now.
ggcnash
Looks like I will definitely want to relocate the charcoal filter as well looks like mounting horizontal will be tight, it was bugging me had to go pop the hood
