Comanche Bodies Question

Recommended Posts

Just was wondering if there was any signifigant differences in the years as far a bodies go?

From what I understand (still learning) one could pretty much get all the options that came in a high trim (Eliminator) and put them in say the Base Model.

I know that there were different bed sizes, but aside from that are there really any major differences that would make a new year ('91 -'92) more desirable as opposed to the earlier years?

Thanks for any advice

Yea renix vs Chrysler system huge difference for most the Chrysler system is way more desirable and has less issues and more power in the h.o. Engine. There are guys on here that can go way more in depth and give more details good luck

there are some minor differences earlier on, depending on what you want to do.  the biggest is the change in the radiator area from 86 to 87+  the rad supports and hood latches changed.  these (plus the firewall got a bit of a bump in it) were done to clear the new 4.0 engine going in.  oh, and in 91 they changed up some of the front fascia/grill pieces and how they went together.

there are some differences in the rear frame between shortbeds and long beds.

that's all I can think of with respect to the body.  these trucks are like lego.  you can get a solid body and make it into the trim level you want if you can find the right pieces.

HO myth buster

Renix in 90 made 182 HP. HO in 91 made 190 HP. That's 8 HP difference.

HO only made more HP than Renix at higher RPMs and not a bit more torque. HO had 58 mm throttle body versus a 52 mm throttle body on a Renix and also had a better design header. See where I'm going with this?

The whole 8HP was not mostly from the head, but from the bigger TB and better exhaust manifold.

Put a 60mm TB from www.strokedjeep.com on your present head, eliminate the "crush" in your headpipe with proper re-routing, and go for it.

HO stands for Highly Overrated.

I have owned both Renix and H.O. 4.0's. I prefer H.O. Renix has its fans but for most it is a PITA for those not familar with it. Got a scan tool? The OBD1 HO is a breeze. Spend the same money to upgrade the HO as you spend upgrading a Renix and you will still be that much ahead. The fact that you have to upgrade the Renix to equal the HO says it all. I don't care if it is throttle body size or exhaust or what; better is better. If it wasn't no one would be suggesting upgrades to level the playing field....  To each his own and like I said: it is just my preference.

I guess I'll cut and paste too, just change the number of times you have posted that non-fact.

You must have posted that same old drivel 473 times now..................... :shake:

Oh, but it's so true. I had 13 Comanches as demos at the dealership. All brand new. Ordered them myself. 4 cylinder with manual trans, 4.0 with manual trans. 4.0 with auto trans. all up through October of 1992. True stuff. Highly Overrated.

Everyone who worked in a Jeep dealership loved the antiquated and troublesome Renix models because they kept the doors open a bit longer from all the extra income generated by their service departments.

Nah. We knew the Renix stuff. Easy peasy. Not for sissies though, those requiring a nanny to point them in the direction of a repair by throwing parts at things based on trouble codes rather than using true diagnostics.
