On the subject of wheels/tires

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at wheels and tires, I usually have my sights set about 3 months out so I have plenty of time to shop.

Casually searching-

The cool wheels are now 16-17-18" and beyond.

None, except the common boring wheel, are hub-centric.

9" widths are not so common. Neither is 5x4.5 anymore, apparently.

Offsets seem unfriendly.

All black seems to be the fad of the day.

Chrome is out of reach.

And I have no idea what tire size is comparable to 32x15 in say a 17" wheel size.

Have any of you gone all out on custom wheels? larger diameters? non-hub-centric?

Anyone have a clue how to seek out a comparison in tire sizes?

Thanks

The typical 32 is a 32x11.50-15. Actual diameter is slightly less than 32, more like 31.7", and width at the sidewalls is about 11.4".

11.4" is 289.56mm. Call it a 285 for nominal tire size purposes (slightly narrower), or bump it to 295.

Using 285 as the width, then we have to figure the aspect ratio. Were looking for an overall diameter of 32". Subtract 17" and that leaves 15 for the tire, and then divide by 2 to get the cross section height: 7.5", which is 190.5mm.

190.5 / 285 = .668.

So in a 17-inch tire you're looking for a 285/65-17.

I have no idea if such a tire exists.

In a 16-inch tire size, a 285/75-16 is 32.8" in diameter (basically a 33) and 11.2" in cross-section width. Call it a 33x11.50-16.

For larger sizes and hub centric look at the Liberty and the Nitro. Nitro's come in sizes up to 20 inches have 5x4.5 lug pattern and are hub centric. Backspacing if its an issue can be taken care of with hub centric spacers like Spidertrax. Other good hub centric with correct pattern wheels come from 2005 and newer Dodge Charger, Magnum, and Challenger, and Chrysler 300. Base models come with a 17 inch steel bullet hole and police cars come with an 18 inch steel 5 spoke. Not to mention a ton of aluminum choices. The steelies at least have been used successfully over on Naxja.org by several people. I have JK 17 inch takeoffs on mine with spidertrax adapters. They measure right at 32 inches stock. JK wheels can also be had stock in 18 inches. Choices are out there. Let us know what you end up with.

I haven't seen any wheels I like better on an MJ than the 15" 10-spoke turbines, and I've been looking. But I'm ready for some new tires, and they will be the "skinny" 33x10.5x15 BFG All-Terrain T/A KO next time they go on sale. They will clear fine and will be perfect for the 4.10 gears too.

Find some used Moab rims off of a TJ Rubicon. Run some 265/75r16 tires to get about 32x11 rubber. Google it up as these are not uncommon swaps onto XJ's and some MJ's on here have them as well. They are not actually chrome but they do have a silver alloy finish.

The conversion factor for inches to metric is 25.4    Example 10.5 inches x 25.4 = 266.7 mm.  To go the other way just divide the metric number by 25.4 to get inches.

Thank you for the information!

My concern with 16" up wheels is the cost of tires, looks like an additional $100 per tire at least.

As it is.......I'm at $8-900 with tax and install locally for BFG 32s, or I'll be in the $12-1400 range for up size.

The goal is to get rid of the Coopers and to stuff as much tire in the hole as possible, I like a full wheel well.

Not a fan of the current trend of black rims. Reminds me of old days when a jalopy's hub caps fell off and the black steel wheel showed.

Tj's came with some nice 15 inch varieties and are usually 8" wide. Have the old gamblers on mine.

I saw some nice gambler knockoffs with black centers on ebay once. If you like the black look.
