Engine Temperature verses performance Renix 4.0L

Recommended Posts

IF my engine temperature ran about 120 degrees F when warm,

IS it running at 120F or are you thinking of controlling the max temperature by putting in a 120F t-stat??

If it's running at 120, replace your t-stat with a 195 stat.

If you're thinking that a cooler t-stat will control upper temps...it won't.

Lately my temperature gage has been staying at about 120 degrees.

I haven't noticed any change in performance, and the heater will still get really warm.

Since it's been a long time, I plan on changing the thermostat and already have one (195 degreee) on order.

I was just curious about any noticeable difference between closed and open loop in the Renix system.

No noticeable change makes me believe that I've maybe been running in open loop for a while.

My engine runs very well at present.

Oh yea, before anyone asks, I'm going out this afternoon and check the actual coolant temperature with my digital thermometer.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, I finally checked my coolant temperature.

I'd been driving the truck for about 20 miles and the engine was fully warmed up.

Gage showed around 110 degrees.

Coolant temperature with the engine running and coolant flowing thru the plastic resevoir...180 degrees.

So I have a operational 180 degree thermostat in the engine.

I checked the temp. sender and it was defective.

Question.

Will the Renix System run in closed loop at 180 degrees engine temperature or do I need to increase the temp to 195 degrees?

The engine runs very well right now.

Is there a way to check if the computer is running in closed loop.

Oh yea.....Since I installed the Volvo fuel injectors my fuel economy has risen 9 MPG....checked it twice.

The additional power is truly impressive.

Feels like I'm driving a sports car.

The cross-over point is approximately 165 degrees. But that's approximate. You can probably get by with a 180 degree thermostst, but the engine was designed to run with a 195. I can't think of a single valid reason to NOT run what the factory has determined through extensive testing to be the best choice.

Check the temperature of your thermostat housing before opening anything up.

Reservoir temps will be lower than thermostat housing temps.

Also you can see how much of a drop there is from one side of your radiator to the other by checking both radiator tanks.

My 92 runs pretty close to 210 at the thermostat housing.

The Renix's reservoir is not an overflow tank, it is pressurized and always has coolant flowing through it, into it on the side, out through the bottom. Because of this the temperature inside the reservoir will be closer to that of the thermostat housing than on the HO engines.

Even so, Frank is correct that the thermostat housing is a much better place to read the temperature.

Thanks for reminding me to check mine.  Mine has also been reading 120ish for a while, after spending a few hours on the trail it gets up to 200 on the gauge, but it takes hours to get there.   I'm gonna check the temps at the radiator and t-stat housing tonight.

Okay, time for myth busting.

Renix goes into Closed Loop very quickly, based on O2 sensor temp. NOT coolant temp.

The ONLY stat I will use anymore is the one from the dealer. 52028186.

I' went through 5 Stant 195s before going factory. At 25* F I drive 2 miles and I'm at 195*.

I hate being cold in the cab. While the stants never let me get too hot in the summer, they took forever to get to operating temp in the cold.

Agree on dealer thermostat.

Trouble is, the dealer I went to changed hands and it went from $13 to $25.

Must be great to work for too. Everybody from the old dealership quit within a month.

They lost a lot of customers too.

Guy that owns a garage near me has bought over 40 vehicles from the old owner.

He changed dealers after the sale.

They've been about $25 for a few years.

Point is, if they do what nobody else's do, they're really worth it.

Off topic, but I've got to ask. If the Volvo injectors improved your gas mileage by 9 MPG, what was it before the injectors and what is it now? I recently checked my 91 and got 18+ on a mix of interstate and street driving (probably more highway than street). If I can pop in a set of those 746's and get 27 MPG I'll be ordering a set PDQ.

Then what's the coolant temperature sensor on the left side of the block for?

To tell the ECU coolant temp so it can adjust timing and fuel maps.

Who got 9 MPG improvement? Not possible.
