Redwolf if you take the time to proper re align the door it should not leak any worse that it does now. if you have a dremel with a small cut off wheel you can cut off the bottom of the hinge without removing it from the door. its a bit of a PITA but i did that to my red MJ as a trial run. yxmj
Honestly it makes no difference if you modify the hinges or not. Taking them off and putting them back on as-is will cause door sealing issues, unless you do as you're supposed to and take the time to adjust them properly. If you just bolt them on and hang the doors, you likely won't even be able to get the pins to line up. My removable doors shut with a 'chink' and have no leaks at highway speed. It's all a matter of whether you plan to do the job right, or half-arsed. Yxmj, are those dorman replacement pins solid, or hollow like the stock roll pins? Got a part number? I've been looking for some good solid pins that I can chamfer so they will slide in a tad easier. Also I haven't seen it mentioned in any writeups, but it helps if you chamfer the top of the hole in the body-half of the hinge, bevel the bottom of the tab on the door-half (the tab that keeps you from opening the door too far) and cut the upper pin a bit shorter while leaving the lower pin full length. Makes it much easier to install the doors that way. Line up the bottom pin first, drop it straight in and the chamfer guides it home, then line up the top pin and drop the door down into position. 2 seconds to hang the doors with no fumbling. I might get around to uploading a couple pics of my hinges later after dark, I'm busy swapping in an HO at the moment :brows: The pins I used were solid with a groove for an e-clip just like the pic I posted....I do not remember the part number but I know they were not the ones spec'd for the XJ....like i said i knew the legth i wanted and the size of the pin shank required and i just went through a few measuring and comparing till i found them.

shelbyluvv
I've found it easier to remove the fender to cut the hinges. Taking out the torx bolts is a PIA on the door hinges.
onlyinajeep726
I didn't undo the torx bolts/remove the hinges from the door when I did the mod. I did all my cuts with the door still on. Maybe that's why I don't have seal issues.
92tanMJ
I can say for a fact I took my MJ off on the hinges/torx bolts and it was a b*@$£. I will never do it again that way. Cut the hinges and move on  Unless you can find someone who really has had issues, then I would worry about it . But like I said, Ive been going doorless in my XJ for 3 years now and my MJ for a year and I have zero issues. And it looks like a lot of your fellow CC members have not had any issues either. :dunno: PS It's rained for the last 24 hours off and on, here - I just drove the truck to walmart and everything was dry [;)]

redwolf624
thanks guys and i think i figured a way to have speakers in the doors with em on, wire nuts at the ends where the wire goes from the door to the cab, 4 wire nuts per door, 2 for positive and 2 for negative when the doors are on have em wired together with 2 and but the other 2 away in a safe place and have all 4 speakers (if rear speakers are installed) and when doors are off have the EQ on the radio set to just rear speakers and have the wire nuts on the speaker wire to the door, i just don't know how well that'd wire nut idea work with the doors on and shut, Redwolf
Blue88Comanche
Someone makes a speaker mount that replaced the kick panel under the dash. I have seen them before. I just don't know the brand.

onlyinajeep726
Yea... forgo the wire nuts... First few times you twist/untwist them and your wire ends will break. Two prong disconnects can be easily and cheaply had from RadioShack or the like. I would use this: 2-conductor connector. Someone makes a speaker mount that replaced the kick panel under the dash. I have seen them before. I just don't know the brand. Here's what you're referring to, but they're hella expensive: Jeep Cherokee Component Speaker Kick Panel
gogmorgo
Judging by the pics they have, not only are those plastic panels expensive, I'm pretty sure they'd interfere with the MJ's parking brake setup. The stock panel on the driver's side has a cutout to accommodate it, or at least the panel on my truck does.
dankicksass
If you're even the least bit competent with fiberglass, you can mod your own kick panels with wood rings or use the cheap plastic universal 6.5in speaker buckets. You can do it for around $25 with the buckets or less with all DIY.
redwolf624
well i've figured out how i'd have a disconnect system for the speakers but sadly i can not have removeable doors in the state of VA somethin bout cuttin the hindges and state inspection :( Redwolf
onlyinajeep726
Add Virginia to the list of states I won't live in... I actually had a random cop here tell me he thought an XJ without doors is awesome and proceeded to ask me how I did it.

onlyinajeep726
Well, N. Carolina requires inspection and you can't renew your registration if it hasn't been inspected, but our southern half does not. NC is a greedy state. They're proposing a VMT now (vehicle mileage tax) in addition to the 3rd highest gas tax in the country. But I digress... gogmorgo
Out of curiosity, anyone know the diameter of the hinge pins off hand? My google-fu has failed me in that department. Even with state inspections, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to punch out the pins drop in a secure replacement (that happens to be removable) and just not drive on the street without doors. Just be nice to the pins you remove and hang onto them so you can put them back in if they call you on it during an inspection. This is a lower priority, but still on a list of things I'd like to do this summer. I'm also planning in rigging up some kind of mirror to mount to the body half of the upper hinge to keep things completely legal.

onlyinajeep726
NC requires inspection? then why don't any of the vehicles have an inspection sticker in the window? Redwolf Yes, they require inspections. They did away with the window stickers to "save" money. You get an E-sticker which is nothing more than a racket to continue charging the same price. All vehicles from '95 and older cost $13.90 for an inspection, '96 and newer costs $30. It's a bunch of malarkey too. Just a couple years ago, they started linking it to your registration so you have to get it inspected before you can renew your registration, otherwise you pay a penalty and risk having your car impounded. BootsNTrucks
If is such an issue readjusting the door hinges after you cut them and take them off why not sharpie outline them before you remove them to at least get you back in the same ballpark?
